When it comes to the top names in European water polo, a few resonate as powerfully as that of Italian international, Edoardo Di Somma. The same can be said for his new club, Ferencvaros.
After eight magnificent years in Italy, the 26-year-old has established himself as a force to be reckoned with. As he embarks on a new chapter outside Italy with Hungarian giants Ferencvaros, the Italian star brings a wealth of experience, dedication, and a hunger for victory that could help bring European glory back to Nepliget for the first time since 2019.
Speaking with Fradi.hu, Di Somma has shared his first thoughts of joining up with his new club and teammates. “First impressions are very positive!” he exclaims. “I was impressed by the atmosphere of the sports center. Everything there is to focus only on water polo.”

The transition to FTC-Telekom provided Di Somma with a unique insight into the club’s ethos. “I was surprised by the kind of organisation and professional mentality that I saw in these first few days,” Di Somma reveals. The integration, it seems, has been seamless, aided by the warm welcome from his new teammates. “Everyone that welcomed me were very friendly.”
FTC is renowned for its demanding gym training, famously referred to as ‘terminator training.’ Di Somma’s is ready to embrace whatever the club throws at him in the gym. “The first gym sessions were also really good” he explains. “We have done different exercises than what Ive done before with my previous teams. They also put a lot of emphasis on deep muscles and balance, which is very important in this sport.”
Di Somma’s journey to FTC was a decision driven by both honor and ambition. Prior to joining Fradi, Di Somma played for Bogliasco, Sport Management and Pro Recco before moving to Brescia three years ago. Reflecting on his choice to re-locate to the Hungarian capital, he emphasizes, “To play here as a Legionnaire, in this club with a long history, is a huge honour.” The decision to step out of Italy was fuelled by a desire for change and a fresh environment. “Now a new chapter begins for me at every level, and I am happy to be here.”
In his own words, Di Somma encapsulates his determination with a resounding declaration: “The goal for me is to win every series.” This unyielding focus on victory, combined with his new surroundings and a talented roster, sets the stage for an intriguing season ahead alongside the likes of fellow summer signing Dusan Mandic, and other foreigners including Stylianos Argyropoulous, Danill Merkulov and fellow-Italian Luca Damonte.
Fradi are often pitted against the reigning European Champions Pro Recco, as was Di Somma during his time in Italy, particularly with Brescia. The former Recco man, however, is optimistic that his new club could dethrone the European Champions. “Anything is possible!” he proclaims. “Recco is a very good team, but I think we will also be very good in the Champions League this year. We have a very solid squad, with plenty of classics, but at the same time, the young players are also talented and hungry for success.”
