Dunajuvaros water polo players defended the Hungarian Cup for ladies.

Dunaujvaros edged out UVSE 7:6 in the final game played in the “Alfred Hajos” Swimming Center in Budapest this evening. This is the 2nd consecutive for Dunaujvaros and 8th winning trophy in this competition in total.

Today’s gold-medal match was a replay of the 2019/20 Hungarian Cup final. Last year, Dunaujvarosi won the trophy after defeating UVSE 13:12 in a penalty shootout.

Dunaujvaros managed to keep the trophy after a slow start, followed by a big comeback.

UVSE opened the match with a 3:0 blast. The Budapest-based team kept Dunaujvaros goalless until the 10th minute when Geraldine Mahieu scored from an extra player for 1:3. A few minutes later, Dunaujvaros equalized – 3:3. Rita Keszthelyi gave UVSE a new lead (4:3), but Dunaujvaros leveled the score by halftime.

Defenses dominated in the third quarter. Finally, two minutes before the last break, Krisztina Garda broke the silence and put Dunaujvaros in front for the first time (5:4). Shortly after that, Kamila Farago equalized (5:5). But Garda responded with her third goal this evening, and Dunaujvaros entered the last quarter with a minimal 6:5 advantage.

Early in the fourth period, Dunajvaros doubled a lead (7:5). In the remaining time, both sides played outstanding in defense. UVSE’s sixth goal, for the final score (6:7), came too late – 21 seconds before the final buzzer.
