After the denouement for the national championship last week, the KNZB Cup is now on the program in the Netherlands. In this Olympic season this competition is played without internationals. This weekend, the decisions were made which teams qualified for the semi-finals.
Men
For the men, UZSC, Het Ravijn, GZC Donk and AZC qualified for the semis. This weekend they completed their group stage with two matches per team. Because no quarter-finals will be played this corona-year, the top two teams of each group qualified directly for the semi-finals. AZC, GZC Donk and UZSC have been certain of a place among the best four for some time. Whoever became the last semi-finalist went between Het Ravijn and ZPC Amersfoort. It became Het Ravijn. The team from Nijverdal had to beat the leader in group B UZSC. They did this with 10:11 (halfway Het Ravijn even led 2:7). As a result, the 9:19 victory of ZPC Amersfoort against PSV no longer affected the score. With a point less than Het Ravijn, Jeroen Cavaljé’s team finished in third place in group B, which marked the end of the season for ZPC Amersfoort. This is also the case for the other teams that did play this weekend. They only played for the statistics
Women
Polar Bears continues to win, even without its internationals. The team from Ede, which won the national title last week at the expense of GZC Donk, defeated ZVL-1886 in the quarterfinals of the KNZB Cup on Saturday. It was exciting. In the third period, Polar Bears still faced an 11:9 deficit. But then Jill Oort got on fire. She scored three times in a row and turned the score to 11:12. Sterre Bijkerk brought ZVL-1886 next to the Polar Bears, but when Laura Schinkel scored 12:13 with just over a minute left, ZVL’s resistance was broken.
It was also exciting between GZC Donk and PSV. In a goal-rich duel, the Gouda ladies only shake off the visitors in the last period. From 14:13 GZC Donk ran out to 20:16. ZV De Zaan also joined the semi-finalists. The team of coach Arjan Vos was with 11:6 too strong for De Ham. De Ham’s final offensive came too late. The team from Crommenie could no longer make up for the 9:2 deficit after three periods.
On Sunday, UZSC was the last to join the semi-finalists. The team from Utrecht took on Het Ravijn for that. The visitors didn’t have a chance. It became 15:5.
