The draw for the womenβs Euro Cup quarterfinals has been made.Β
CN Terrassa barely made it through to the next round, and now they’ll have to face the Group B winners, the red-hot FTC Telekom.Β
Two of the other matches pit Hungarian teams against their Greek counterparts: 2017 winners UVSE face off against Ethnikos, the defending champions, while Eger mulls a tough matchup against Vouliagmeni.
Although Lille have proven their worth by making it this far, they will face a formidable opponent in Plebiscito Padova, who won the bronze medal in the Euro League in the previous season.Β
The quarterfinals, like the semis and the final that will follow, will be played over the course of two legs. In the event of an aggregate draw after both games are played, a penalty shoot-out is the method of choice to separate the teams.Β
Quarter-finalsΒ – 1st Leg (28th January)
CN Terrassa vs FTC TelekomΒ
UVSE vs EthnikosΒ
NC Vouliagmeni vs ZF Eger
Plebiscito Padova vs LUC Metropole
Quarter-finalsΒ – 2nd Leg (11th February)
FTC Telekom vs CN Terrassa
Ethnikos vs UVSE
ZF Eger vs NC Vouliagmeni
LUC Metropole vs Plebiscito Padova
There is a sense of deja vu for half the teams in these quarter-finals.Β
UVSE and Ethnikos met back in December in the Champions League, with the Hungarians running-out 10-8 winners in that meeting. Lille and Plebiscito have also locked horns this campaign, with Plebiscito easily triumphing 18-10 in that duel.Β Β
Eger has good reason to be cautious going into their game with the 2nd placed team in the Greek A1, and 2003 winners, Vouliagmeni. The Hungarians have a winless record against Greek teams this season, so they’ll be hoping that the third time’s a charm.Β
Meanwhile, while FerencvΓ‘ros are slight favourites to beat Terrassa, they will know that they have been less than convincing against Spanish teams in the past. In their nine European ties against Spanish opposition, they have lost seven, with their only two wins coming against Mediterrani, the latest of which was back in November.
