Two Champions League winners – reigning champion Ferencvaros and 2017 winner Szolnok – will face off in the final match of the Hungarian Cup.

The Final Four of the Hungarian Cup has started today at the “Alfred Hajos” pool in Budapest. Ferencvaros, which won the trophy in this competition in 2018 and 2019, beat Vasas in the semifinals (13:9), while Szolnok downed BVSC (11:5).

2020/21 Hungarian Cup, Final Four

Semifinals

BVSC – Szolnok 5:11 (0:3, 0:3, 2:2, 3:3)

BVSC: Csapo 2, Czigany 1, Irmes 1, Batizi 1.
Szolnok: Konarik 3, Drasovic 2, Filipovic 2,Jansik 1, Angyal 1, Ger.Kovacs 1, Schmolcz 1.

Ferencvaros – Vasas 13:9 (2:1, 5:2, 4:5, 2:1)

Ferencvaros: Fountoulis 3, Jansik 3, Ven. Vigvari 2, Sedlmayer 1, Vamos 1, Mezei 1, Jaksic 1, Constantin-Bicari 1.
Vasas: Szatmari 3, Vadovic 2, Brguljan 1, Batori 1, Takacs 1, Simon 1.

Szolnok beat BVSC easily in the first semifinal match. BVSC was an underdog. This club arrived at Final Four as a reserve team. BVSC replaced OSC, which wasn’t able to play since the team hasn’t fully recovered from coronavirus. Szolnok showed no mercy and played excellently in defense. The former European champion earned an 8:0 lead by the middle of the third quarter. BVSC scored its first goal in the 20th minute, but it was too late for a comeback.

The encounter between Ferencvaros and Vasas was the semifinals’ derby, but the winner was decided much before the end. Vasas scored an opening goal (Brguljan in the 3rd minute). Ferencvaros took control in the final minutes of the first period. The European champions scored two goals in the last 80 seconds of the first quarter and earned a 2:1 lead before the first break.

Ferencvaros continued its series and flew to a 6:1 lead in the 6th minute of the second quarter. Vasas started to recover from that shock, so the rest of the game was a balanced battle. But, Ferencvaros’s win wasn’t in danger. “Fradi” even had a 6-goal advantage (9:3) in the third period. Vasas managed to cut the deficit twice in the 8th minute od this quarter (7:10 and 8:11). However, Ferencvaros kept the distance during the final eight minutes and took the ticket for the final game with a 13:9 win.

Tomorrow evening, Vasas and BVSC will battle for the bronze, before the encounter between Feerncvaros and Szolnok.
