Rap icon Flavor Flav has pledged his support to the U.S. womenβs team as they aim for a fourth consecutive gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
Moved by a heartfelt Instagram appeal by team captain Maggie Steffens for more recognition and support, Flavor Flav will officially sponsor USA Water Polo and boost their visibility.
At 65, the Public Enemy star is eager to elevate the team’s profile, already engaging with fans and promoting key players on social media. He expressed his enthusiasm about his role, promising unmatched energy and support in Paris: “When I come out and I watch this water polo team … ‘USA! USA!’ Yo, I’m going to be the biggest hype man that they ever had in their life”
Despite their consistent success, the U.S. women’s water polo team has struggled for the same level of attention as other dominant U.S. sports teams, a challenge Steffens highlighted in her post. She noted the ongoing financial struggles and lesser visibility compared to sports like football or basketball.
Flavor Flav, who was introduced to the team’s plight by his manager, felt a personal connection to their aspirations, remarking, “I know what it feels like to want to see a dream come true.”
The team’s unexpected alliance with Flavor Flav, who was inducted with the group Public Enemy into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013, is not the only high-profile ally the team has accrued recently, with the team also enjoying support from pop star Taylor Swift, attending her concert in Parisβin the very same venue they hope to win their fourth successive olympic gold medal.
These unique high-profile partnerships will no doubt help promote water polo, the women’s game, andΒ Β the U.S. women’s water polo team as they prepare for the Olympic spotlight in Paris.
