Dramatic Waterpolo Weekend in Düsseldorf, Germany: The two-day final event in Düsseldorf’s Rheinbad featured Germany’s best female and male clubs battling out the 2019 “DSV-Pokal” (German Cup). Interestingly, teams from the currently most dominant German water polo powerhouses Waspo 98 Hannover and Wasserfreunde Spandau 04 made it into both, female and male finals – with each grabbing a trophy for their club.
German Cup 2019 – Male Category
Defending champion Waspo 98 Hannover won the final of the German Cup (DSV-Pokal) after a dramatic 10:9 match against Wasserfreunde Spandau 04. With the scores tied at 6:6 after regular playing time, Hannover prevailed in the penalty shoot-out (4:3), winning the German Cup for the fifth time since 1998.
In a close match, dominated by the strong defence on both sides, neither team was able to break away and secure a substantial lead. What followed was a highly dramatical shoot-out, with advantage switching side multiple times.
In the prior bronze medal match, ASC Duisburg secured their place on the podium by defeating another team from Hannover and a final series newcomer, the White Sharks (14:5).

While their male club members fell just short of the trophy, the ladies from Spandau 04 left no doubt about who the dominant force in Germany is: They first defeated the later bronze medalists SV Nikar Heidelberg 8:15 in the semis and then crushed Waspo 98 Hannover 4:13 in the finals.
