In a new exclusive interview with Total Waterpolo, we had the privilege of speaking with Sofia Giustini, the star of the Italian national women’s water polo team. Sofia provided us with insights into the highly anticipated World Championship, set to take place in Fukuoka.
Giustini highlighted the unwavering focus of the Italian team, emphasising their singular goal and unwavering determination to achieve it:
Our goal is always to win the gold medal but to get it you have to beat everyone and we are ready to do it!
Throughout its history, the Italian women’s national team has yet to claim victory in the World Cup. However, they have achieved commendable milestones with two silver medals (1993, 2006) and one bronze medal (1999) to their name. In recent years, the team showcased their prowess by securing the bronze medal at the European Championship in Split and reaching the quarter-finals at the World Championship in Budapest. Sofia Giustini, in her career, has also attained individual success with a silver medal (2018) and a bronze medal (2019) in the Youth World Championship.

Following Italy’s winning the bronze medal in the European Championship held in Split, their performance experienced some fluctuations. However, Sofia revealed that the team dedicated significant effort to address and improve this aspect:
We’ve worked on it all summer, we’re aware of everything we’ve faced so far but above all what we can do.
Despite her young age, Sofia Giustini has already established herself as a superstar in the world of water polo. She passionately describes her deep-rooted connection with the sport and the pivotal role she plays within her teams:
I really like to play water polo, I love water polo. I like to help the team win and see them celebrate later.
During the last season, Sofia had to play with a mask for a month due to an injury, and she shared her thoughts and impressions about that experience:
The mask kept me company for a month, and then, fortunately, abandoned it. I had a broken nose and it was risky in the first month after the impact to play without any protection, now I’m fine, very much.
Sofia Giustini’s captivating smile is widely regarded as the biggest and brightest in the world of water polo. The Italian player unveiled the secret behind her radiant smile:
Absolutely yes, I love to play but above all to have fun, my smile is due to all this.
In the summer transfer window, Giustini made a significant move, switching clubs from Roma to Sabadell. As a new player at Sabadell, she shared some insights about her transfer:
As soon as I received the call I was very excited, I decided to go and play in the strongest team in Europe and with the best players in Europe to grow even more, to win and have fun. I am honoured and can’t wait to play with Sabadell and my new teammates.
