Dusan Mandic’s future at Novi Beograd hangs precariously in the balance after the club hierarchy have reportedly confirmed that he has been suspended from playing until further notice.
A number of reports in Serbia appear to suggest that the Beograd head coach, Živko Gocić, is dissatisfied with his captain and his recent performances, and has now decided to keep him away from training with his teammates.
Mandic, a two-time Olympic champion, has been a crucial part of the Novi Beograd project for the past 21 months. However, his suspension could spell the end of his tenure with the club. In Mandic’s last appearance, Novi Beograd suffered a shock 15-13 penalty shoot-out defeat to Jug Adriatic in the semi-finals of the Regional League. Jug went on to lift the title with a 14-12 win over fellow Croatian’s, Jadran Split.
The repercussions of the 28-year-old’s expulsion from club water polo are expected to spill over into his involvement with the Serbian national team, but to what extent is still uncertain.
The club is expected to release an official statement on the matter later today. Novi Beograd, as of yet, are still without silverware this season, having already lost the Serbian Cup and the Regional League final.
