Many teams in the Dutch league played two games this weekend. Leader AZC and the lower ranked ZPB became the winners of the weekend.
AZC won on Saturday against ZPC Amersfoort (8-6) and on Sunday against UZSC (12-9). On Saturday, the difference was made in the first period. Milos Filipovic and Lars Reuten brought AZC to 2-0. Center Max van der Werve did something back on behalf of the Amersfoort team, but when Jacoppo Mandolini scored a penalty (3-1), ZPC Amersfoort had to chase again. Jeroen Cavaljé’s team was never able to close the gap completely. ZPC Amersfoort was close twice, but AZC always managed to put the margin back to two goals. On Sunday there was a high tense against UZSC, which easily won against BZC on Saturday (13-4). Only at the end of the game AZC was able to run out. Jacoppo Mandolini, Milos Filipovic, Tim Reuten and Robin Lindhout brought AZC to 8-12.Â
ZPC Amersfoort had a bad weekend anyway. Except for the defeat on Saturday against AZC, the team from Amersfoort also failed to win on Sunday. ZPB was surprisingly too strong with 15-13. A disastrous third period from Amersfoort left ZPC behind 12-9. In the final period, ZPC Amersfoort was not able to close that gap. With this victory ZPB continues its winning streak. Because the team from Barendrecht also won the day before. Then the team of Arjen Silvis was too strong for SVH (10-4). Due to this good weekend, ZPB has moved up to the eleventh place.
GZC Donk, Polar Bears and ZV De Zaan also won twice. ZV De Zaan both time with big numbers: on Saturday with 19-10 against ZVL-1886 and on Sunday with 21-6 against BZC. Against ZVL, ZV De Zaan further controlled the game after a goal-rich first period (7-5). In the second period it ran to 10-5 thanks to Pascal Janssen, Casper van der Struijk and Mick van den Bree. The ZV De Zaan also continued to score in the third period. Only after Van den Bree’s 13-5 did the visitors found the net again, but by then the game was already over.
Polar Bears won on Saturday against PSV (22-8) and on Sunday against Water Polo Den Haag (9-8). Den Haag resisted Polar Bears surprisingly well on Sunday. With two minutes left on the clock, Koen Heiden put the 8-8 on the board, but Guus Wolswinkel scored the winning 9-8 a minute later.
GZC Donk won on Saturday against De Ham (14-9) and on Sunday against ZVL-1886 (16-7). De Ham took a surprising 0-3 lead on Saturday. But GZC Donk fought back by goals form Mart van der Weijden and Stan van den Heuvel. However, it took until the end of the second period for the home team to take the lead for the first time.Â
Het Ravijn only played on Saturday. The team form Nijverdal beat Waterpolo Den Haag (14-6), but that didn’t happen by itself. It was only after a thunderous speech from the coach at half-time that Het Ravijn secured the victory.Â
Women
Three games in the women’s league. Leader ZV De Zaan beat Polar Bears. It was the first time this season that ZV De Zaan was better than Polar Bears. After three defeats (Supercup and two times in the league) the team of Wouter Veer finally won. Maxine Schaap’s 5-6 at the end of the third period brought ZV De Zaan in the final period with a small lead. When Anouk Bergsma made it 5-7, Polar Bears failed to close that gap.
After four defeats in a row, Het Ravijn finally won. The higher ranked UZSC was nicely put aside with 8-10. After Pien Gorter’s 3-4 at the end of the second period, Wicher Diallo’s team led the entire game.Â
De Ham won 7-13 against PSV, thus creating a serious gap with last place. Lizette Rozeboom in particular was on fire. She scored six times.
