The derby encounter between Pro Recco and Savona was the highlight of Round 5 of the Italian Championship.
Recco water polo players didn’t let Savona surprise them, but they had to fight hard for the points. After the third period, the score was 7:7. Pro Recco secured the win with three goals in the last eight minutes (10:7).
Title-holder Brescia recorded the big win over Iren Quinto (18:8). Ortigia reached the double-digit margin in beating Metanopoli (15:5).
Catania, Trieste and Anzio earned away wins.

Pro Recco needed just 70 seconds of the game against Savona to gain a 2:0 lead. The visitors found the net for the first time in the 6th minute (1:2). After the first period, Recco led 3:2. The second quarter was balanced. The European champions rebuilt a 2-goal lead early in the third quarter (6:4), but Savona leveled the score at 6:6 and again at 7:7. However, after the last break, Recco shut out Savona and scored three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter for a 10:7 victory. Zeno Bertoli, who arrived at Recco from Posillipo this summer, scored three goals. Andrea Fondelli netted three for Savona.
Sicilian clubs Ortigia, Telimar and Catania, enjoyed a nice day.
Ortigia and Telimar, which are preparing for the 2nd leg of the LEN Euro Cup quarterfinals, recorded home wins as expected.
Telimar didn’t start well against Roma, which was in front before the second quarter (2:1). Telimar scored three goals in the first three minutes of the second period to gain a 4:2 lead. Roma equalized by the middle break (4:4), and leveled the score twice in the third period (5:5, 6:6), but they ran out of gas for the final quarter. The Palermo-based side won by four goals (10:6).
Ortigia left no chance to Metanopoli.
The third Sicilian club Catania visited Rome and returns home with three points in the pocket, after producing a great comeback. Catania faced Lazio. The hosts led 9:7 two and a half minutes before the end of the third quarter. But, Catania produced a 5:0 series in the remaining time for a 12:9 victory.
After a surprising loss to Trieste last week, Brescia got back on the winning track beating Quinto. The reigning champion, led by Boris Vapenski, had a 3-goal lead already in the first quarter (3:0 and 4:1). However, Quinto equalized twice during the second quarter (4:4, 5:5). Brescia ruled the field in the second half and cruised to an 18:8 victory.
Encouraged by the last week’s victory over Brescia, Trieste beat Salerno. The second quarter (6:1 for Trieste) determined the rest of the encounter. Ivan Bego (5 goals) and Yusuke Inaba (4) were the heroes of the win.
Anzio Waterpolis earned an away victory over Posillipo with five goals from a veteran Alex Giorgetti.
