Honved upsets Vasas with great finish

After eight rounds of the Hungarian League, three teams remain unbeaten.

The highlight of the 8th round, the first one in 2023, was the Budapest-derby, Vasas – Honved. Vasas, which had a 7 – 0 record before the 8th round, was the host, but Honved took all three points, thanks to a stunning finish – 11:8. Two Honved’s series of three consecutive goals were crucial.

After defeats in the Champions League, Ferencvaros and OSC continued their winning streaks with convincing victories.

Apart from Ferencvaros and OSC, Szolnok is still unbeaten. Szolnok defeated PVSK in Pecs (16:9) and climbed to 3rd place ahead of Vasas. Szolnok has won 22 points (seven wins and one draw)

Honved was a better rival in the opening minutes of the Budapest-derby. The first quarter belonged to the visitors (3:2). Vasas imposed its rhythm in the second quarter and led 5:4 at halftime. The hosts doubled their advantage after the middle break (6:4, 7:5). But, Honved retook control. Led by Norbert Hosnyanszky and Sebastian Hessels, Honved produced a 3:0 run and entered the final quarter leading 8:7.

Selley Rauscher leveled at 8:8 in the 26th minute. However, it turned out that it was Vasas’ last goal. Honved found the net three times in the last six minutes. Bengeduz Ekler and Sebastian Hessels gave Honved a 2-goal lead with two quick power play goals (10:8). The visitors’ defense, commanded by Attila Decker, did its job excellently in the final quarter. and Honved was keeping the advantage. Honved earned a penalty shot with 57 seconds remaining on the clock. Veteran Norbert Hosnyanszky sent the ball into the net from the 5m line and sank Vasas’ last hope – 11:8.

Ferencvaros, which is still without goalkeeper Vogel, Jansik and Damonte, easily beat UVSE (12:5). The reigning champion dominated from the beginning and had a 9:1 lead in the 22nd minute. UVSE narrowed the gap in the last ten minutes but didn’t avoid a convincing defeat.

OSC cruised to a victory against Kaposvar. At halftime, the home side led 8:3 and doubled its advantage in the following 16 minutes (17:7).

The match PVSK – Szolnok produced a similar storyline. Szolnok secured the victory in the first half. The visitors netted six and conceded only two goals in the first two quarters. Szolnok controlled the match in the second half and increased the margin to seven (16:9)

Eger beat Szeged by one goal (8:7). The first half indicated that Eger would cruise to a win. The hosts led 4:0 and 5:1. Eger controlled the match and led by three in the fourth quarter (7:4 and 8:5). Szeged scored two goals in the very last minute. However, the visitors reduced the gap to one (7:8) just 18 seconds before the end. There was not enough time for an equalizer.

BVSC was very close to a victory over Miskolc, but the match ended in a 10:10 draw. BVSC had a 3-goal advantage with 03:43 minutes to go(9:6). However, Miskolc scored three goals in less than two minutes and caught up with the hosts (9:9). Immediately after the equalizer, Gyarfas put BVSC in front again (10:9). But, just three seconds before the buzzer, the same player committed a penalty foul. Varkonyi made no mistake from the 5m line and Miskolc earned a point – 10:10

Szentes collected its first points in the season by beating KSI in Budapest. Only a goal separated the rivals at the end of the match (Szentes won 12:11). But, it wasn’t such a close contest as the final score says. Szentes dictated the pace. KSI was coming back from time to time. Still, Szentes built a 4-goal lead (12:8) early in the fourth quarter. KSI scored the last three goals in the match, but the last one came too late – in the very last second when everything had already been decided.
