Barcelona won the trophy at the first „Barcelona Cup“, held in the biggest Catalan city.
Two Spanish clubs – the hosts and Sabadell, German Waspo Hannover and French Montpellier took part in the tournament.
The tournament was the last test for Barcelona and Hannover in their preparations for the Champions League qualifications (September 7 – 10). Both teams will play in the same group. Hannover will host Group A of the qualifications. Barcelona will be one of the Germans’ rivals. The remaining participants are Crvena Zvezda, Honved and Apollon Smyrnis.
The two Spanish clubs, which reshaped their teams during the transfer window, recorded convincing wins in the first two rounds. Sabadell beat Montpellier 19:6 and Hannover 15:11. Barcelona opened the tournament with an 11:4 win over the Germans. After that, it downed Montpellier (20:9).
Therefore, the Spanish derby on the last day was a battle for 1st place. Barcelona edged out the Champions League wild-card holder Sabadell in an exciting game – 12:11 and took the trophy.
Hannover finished in 3rd and Montpellier in 4th place.
