Twelve games were played on Day 1 of the 2020/21 Hungarian Cup. All of the favorites recorded wins. Ferencvaros was very convincing, Szolnok, OSC, Vasas, Eger opened the tournaments with victories. But there were a few exciting games.

Daniel Varga debuted on OSC’s bench with two big wins.
The match that offered a lot of thrills was an encounter between Szentes and Debrecen, in which one goal decided the winner. Debrecen had a good start, it led 1:0 and 2:1. But, after that, Szentes took control and , led by Andras Garancsy, was in front for most of the time. In the fourth quarter, Szentes built a 10:7 lead, but they couldn’t relax until the end of the game. Debrecen came very close 40 seconds before the end (9:10). Still, Szentes kept the slim lead and three points.

Szolnok defeated BVSC much harder than it was expected. BVSC was in front for most of the time. In the first three quarters, Szolnok took the lead just once (4:3 in the middle of the second). BVSC had a 2-goal advantage five minutes before the end (7:5). But, the Budapest-based side ran out of gas for the final minutes. Szolnok, led by two newcomers – superstar Filip Filipovic and Akos Konarik produced a 4:0 series in the last four and a half minutes (each of them scored two goals) for a 9:7 victory.

The games of Group C have been played in the “temple of Hungarian water polo” – in the “Alfred Hajos” pool on Margaret Island in Budapest.
Playing without injured Denes Varga and Gergo Zalanaki, Ferencvaros ran over PVSK and KSI, scoring 47 goals in two games. In the morning session, Ferencvaros beat PVSK Pecs 25:5. The European champion defeated KSI, the host of the tournament, 22:7. Ferencvaros’ head coach Zsolt Varga gave the opportunity to younger players. Top scorers in both matches were two players who arrived in “Fradi” this summer. Gergo Fekete found the net five times in the match against PVSK. Vendel Vigvari netted five goals in the game against KSI.
The encounter between Miskolc and PVSK Pecs was, without any doubt, the most thrilling match of the day. After a lot of twists and turns, PVSK had a 9:7 lead at halftime. The players of Miskolc were trailing by three goals (9:12) down in the 23rd minute. But, Miskolc managed to come back. Although PVSK was 13:11 up a minute and a half before the final buzzer, Miskolc secured a point. Oliver Hornyak scored an equalizer for 13:13 just 36 seconds before the end.

Group D (Tatabanya)

Eger easily defeated the home team Tatabanya.
Vasas, with many experienced debutants in the team, beat Honved in the derby of the day. The first half of the math was quite balanced. Early in the second period, the score was 4:4. After that, Vasas kept Honved goalless for almost a quarter and a half, while it scored five goals in a row. Before the fourth period, Vasas secured a comfortable 9:4 lead.

In honor of Benedek and Karpati
At the start of the tournament in Budapest, Ferencvaros’ fans paid honor to Hungarian water polo legends Tibor Benedek and Gyorgy Karpati, who passed away in June.
