Favorites made no mistake in the first stage of the Hungarian Cup. Reigning champion Ferencvaros, OSC, Szolnok and Vasas finished the tournaments atop of their respective groups. Each of the four teams recorded three wins.
The Cup will be continued next weekend. According to the rankings in the 1st stage, the teams are divided into four new groups. The points won in the 1st round, are carried to the 2nd stage (the composition of the new groups is at the end of the article)

OSC was too strong for the rivals in the group in Szeged. After two consecutive wins on Day 1, OSC closed the tournament with a 15:6 victory over Szentes. The Budapest-based team even had an 11-goal advantage (13:2).
Szeged earned its first points, by defeating Debrecen 9:5.

Day 1: BVSC – Szolnok 7:9, Kaposvar – UVSE 10:13
After yesterday’s slow start (a 9:7 win over BVSC), Szolnok cruised to the victories on the second competition day. In the morning session, the 2017 European champion beat UVSE 17:9. The top scorer was Akos Konarik (4 goals), who arrived in Szolnok from UVSE this summer.
Kaposvar controlled the match against BVSC and it had a four-goal lead several times (7:3, 8:4, 9:5, 10:6). But BVSC didn’t give in and equalized in the middle of the final quarter – 13:13. Shortly after, Kaposvar earned a new lead (14:13), but BVSC secured a point – 14:14.
In the afternoon session, BVSC defeated UVSE 12:9. BVSC got off to a good start and earned a 3:0 lead by the middle of the first period. That difference proved vital for BVSC’s victory. The sides fought a balanced battle in the rest of the game, but UVSE couldn’t equalize or take a lead.
Szolnok, led by Danial Angyal and Dusko Pijetlovic, stormed past Kaposvar – 22:4 in the last game of the tournament.

PVSK Pecs recorded the first win by beating the home team KSI. PVSK started very well and earned a 4:0 lead. After they found themselves four goals down, KSI players started climbing back and leveled the score in the middle of the third period (7:7). But, they didn’t manage to take a lead. PVSK entered the last minute with a 10:8 advantage. KSI just reduced the gap.
In the last match, Ferencvaros staged another power demonstration. “Fradi” blew away Miskolc, which finished in 2nd place. Miskolc and PVSK won 4 points each, but Miskolc has a better goal difference.

In the opening match of the 2nd day, Honved edged out Eger. Honved led for most of the time, and earned an 11:7 advantage early in the third period. But, Eger came back and equalized by the last break – 11:11. In the 27th minute, Eger went in front for the first time – 13:12. But, Honved responded with three goals in a row and converted the deficit to a 15:13 lead 49 seconds before the final buzzer. After that, Eger scored a consolation goal. The best scorer was Norbert Hosnyanszky, the experienced player of the Hungarian national team, who moved to Honved from Eger a few weeks ago.
Vasas proved that it started to return to the top of the Hungarian water polo. Today, Vasas cruised to wins over host Tatabanya and Eger.

(The best eight clubs will continue the battle for the title in Group 1, while the others will play in the group for the classification 9th-16th places. At this stage, teams that have clashed before won’t meet again. Mutual results of the games between the teams which were in the same group in the first two phases will be carried to the third stage.)
