The third stage of the Hungarian Cup (group 1st-8th place) has been completed today, with eight matches played in the βAlfred Hajosβ pool on Margaret Island in Budapest.
As many expected and supposed, the goal difference decided the final rankings.
Three teams β Ferencvaros, Szolnok, and OSC, continued their winning streaks, which have lasted since Round 1. They finished the third stage with the same number of points, so the goal-difference was needed as a criterion to determine the standings of the first three teams.
Ferencvaros was far ahead of the rivals (with a +42 goal difference) and finished atop the table. OSC took the 2nd place, while Szolnok finished 3rd. Vasas was surprisingly defeated by Honved in the last round of Stage 3 and dropped to the 4th position.

The festival of goals opened the afternoon program. Ferencvaros, led by captain Marton Vamos, who scored eight goals, ran over Eger β 24:3. The European champion practically secured the 1st place after this win. Fradiβ built a big goal-difference (+42), and that proved unreachable for the other teams that were eyeing the top of the table.
An encounter between Szolnok and BVSC offered a lot of excitement. Szolnok secured the win just five seconds before the end. Szolnok was in front most of the time, but BVSC didnβt let the favorites build a big gap. BVSC did a great job by stopping Szolnokβs star Filip Filipovic, who didnβt score a goal in this match. Two minutes before the end of the third period, Szolnok led 7:5. But, BVSC managed to turn the score and went ahead β 9:8 late in the third period. Before the final quarter, BVSC had a slim advantage (10:9). Still, a minute and a half from the end, Szolnok retook the lead (11:10). The drama wasnβt over yet. BVSCβs Tamas Gyarfas equalized -11:11 with 41 seconds remaining on the clock. But, Adam Nagy beat the buzzer and scored a winner for Szolnok -12:11 five seconds before the end.
Vasas, which was the group leader before the afternoon session, suffered the first loss in the season, after a very thrilling match against Honved. The game saw a lot of twists and turns, but Honved had an advantage most of the time. Early in the fourth period, Honved was 10:8 up. However, Vasas scored three goals in a row and went in front β 11:10 with 01:38 to go. It seemed that Vasas would collect the points. But, just two seconds before the end, Sandor Illes scored an equalizer. Since there are no ties in the third stage, the penalty shootout decided the winner. The players of Honved had stronger nerves and celebrated the surprising win. Since the game was ended after a penalty shootout, Honved earned two, and Vasas one point.
OSC found it easy to beat Eger 21:5. The young team of Eger played without the best scorer Baksa Benedek (head coach Petrovai didn’t send him into the water in today’s matches, to avoid a risk of injury). Eger didn’t recover from a loss to Ferencvaros, that they suffered a few hours earlier. OSC showed no mercy and recorded a big win, but the goal difference achieved by Ferencvaros remained unattainable.
Played on August 6th/7th: Szolnok β Miskolc 17:12, OSC β Honved 14:9, Ferencvaros β BVSC 15:10, Vasas β Eger 16:10.
