The U17 Women’s European Championships in Manisa are gradually shaping up as the final round of Group Stage fixtures approaches tomorrow.
Five teams have maintained their unbeaten status after playing at least two games in Manisa. These teams include the top performers in Group A (Hungary), Group B (Greece), Group C (Slovakia), and Group D (Turkey), all retaining their 100% win records. Serbia also joins the ranks of the undefeated, having secured two wins and one tie.
Hungary demonstrated their dominance in the final match of the day, achieving a convincing six-goal victory over Italy, solidifying their position as a formidable force in the tournament. Meanwhile, in Division 1, the disparity in performance was evident as the teams in two games were separated by ten goals, with Greece defeating the Netherlands 13-3 and Spain overpowering Croatia with an 18-8 scoreline. Israel rebounded from their previous defeat with an impressive 17-6 thrashing of France.
In Division 2, Slovakia appears well-positioned to finish atop Group C with another commanding ten-goal victory against Malta (15-5). Romania and Serbia also achieved victories, significantly bolstering their chances of securing a spot in the top 12 teams of the tournament.
Day 3, U17 Women’s European Championships, Manisa Turkiye
Hungary continues to demonstrate their strength in the competition, securing their second win with a convincing 13-7 victory over Italy. Although Italy initially showed promise, taking a 2-0 lead, Hungary quickly regained control, ending the first quarter at 3-2 and dominating the second quarter with a 6-1 lead, led by Zoe Lendvay’s three goals.
Spain secured their first win in the tournament with an impressive 18-8 triumph over Croatia. The Spanish team, under the guidance of senior coach Marian Diaz from Mediterrani, displayed their quality with intermittent goals against the Croatian side. Carlotta Penalver from Mediterrani emerged as the top scorer of the game with five goals.
Greece remains the only undefeated team in Group B, showcasing a commanding ten-goal superiority over the Netherlands with a scoreline of 13-3. A 4-0 quarter at the beginning and end of the game, along with a more balanced middle period, demonstrated Greece’s greater poise, despite missing two penalties from the 5m line. Efsthathia Kovatsevtis from Alimos and Ariadni Karampetsou from Ethnikos each tallied three goals. Conversely, in a surprising result, Israel outclassed their French counterparts with a dominant 17-6 victory.
Slovakia appears poised to secure a first-place finish in Group C after defeating Malta with a score of 15-5. Although both teams recorded victories on Day 2, the Slovakian team demonstrated their prowess when they met today, particularly in the third quarter, where they scored five straight goals to shift the momentum in their favour.
Romania narrowly defeated Switzerland 8-7, with Olivia-Eva Csaki contributing six crucial goals. Romania’s relatively decent powerplay conversion rate (42%) proved to be crucial, compared to Switzerland’s 0% conversion rate.
Great Britain’s hopes for a top-12 finish took a hit after falling 12-10 against Ukraine. A slow start saw the British team trailing 4-1 in the opening eight minutes, and despite their efforts to close the gap, they couldn’t overcome Ukraine’s lead, particularly with two quick scores from Emilia Khmil in the final minutes.
Serbia now stands on course to finish second in Group D after a 9-5 victory over Ireland. Their upcoming match against the host country, Turkey, who are also undefeated in the group, will determine the group winner.
