The group stage has concluded on day three of the U20 Women’s World Championships, and the path to the medals is now pencilled in.
Hungary has automatically advanced to the quarter-finals as the Group B winners, following their steely 10-8 victory over the United States. In a thrilling last game of the day, Hungary capitalized on their opponent’s lackluster performance. The Magyar captain, Panni Szegedi, led her team to a crucial victory with an impressive six goals. Both teams now bypass the crossover rounds to secure their spots in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, Italy, who triumphed over Hungary on day one, will have to battle it out in an additional cross-over game.
Over in Group A, Spain needed a penalty shootout to secure their position at the top of the group, sealing a 13-10 win over Greece. Both teams have also automatically secured berths in the quarter-finals.
Among today’s other notable results in Coimbra, Croatia exacted revenge on Japan, earning the top spot in Group E. After a defeat to the Blue Samurai on day one, the Croats bounced back with a convincing 16-9 victory. With only two teams in Group E because of China’s withdrawal, the two sides were essentially locked in a two-legged play-off, which the Croats won on aggregrate.
Australia dominated India with a resounding 30-4 win to solidify their position at the summit of Group F while Canada prevailed over France (11-7), with Stanford Cardinal star Serena Browne catching the eye with an impressive seven scores. New Zealand went two wins for two in Group C with a commanding ten goal victory (18-8) over their southern hemisphere rivals, South Africa.
As a result, New Zealand, Canada, Croatia, and Australia will all tussle to determine their cross-over opponents, potentially facing one of four teams that finished third and fourth in Groups A and B, namely, the Netherlands, Italy, Brazil, or Israel.
The tournament for the rest of the field is not over yet. The seven teams: Chile, India, Japan, Portugal, France, Kazakhstan and South Africa, will now form two further groups to determine classification.
