Italian Cup: Pro Recco and Brescia with no mercy, thriller in Savona

The new water polo season in Italy began with the games of the National Cup. The first games of the first round were played today, the tournaments will be finished tomorrow.

The top two teams from each of the four groups will advance to the second round.

2020/21 Italian Cup, Day 1

Group A (Genoa)

Pro Recco-Iren Quinto 18:4 (4:1, 5:1, 3:2, 6:0)

Pro Recco: Mandic 4, N. Presciutti 3, Younger 2, Echenique 2, A. Ivovic 2,Figlioli 1, Di Fulvio 1, Velotto 1, Figari 1, S. Luongo 1.

Florentia bye

Pro Recco, with a new coach Gabriel Hernandez, showed no mercy to home team Quinto. Dusan Mandic was the best scorer (4 goals), while Australian Aaron Younger, Pro Recco’s most important addition this summer, debuted with two goals.

Group B (Rome)

Brescia-Roma Nuoto 17:6 (4:1, 4:2, 4:2, 5:1)

Lazio bye

Brescia ran over Roma. Maro Jokovic scored two goals in his first match for Brescia. Serbian center-forward Djordje Lazic, who joined Brescia during the transfer window, didn’t debut today. He still hasn’t come to Italy, due to the travel restrictions in the age of corona.

Group C (Naples)

Ortigia-Posillipo 10:7 (1:3, 5:2, 3:1, 1:1)

After a slow start, Ortigia water polo players recorded the win, which they expected.

Group D (Savona)

Metanopoli-Trieste 11:15 (4:6, 1:2, 2:2, 4:5)

Savona-Telimar 10:11 (2:2, 2:3, 3:3, 3:3)

Savona: Vuskovic 2, Molina 1, Rizzo 1, Campopiano 1, Fondelli 4, Iocchi Gratta 1.
Telimar: Vlahovic 3, Damonte 3, Galioto 1, Occhione 1, Marziali 2, Lo Dico 1.

Trieste defeated the newcomer to the Serie A1 Metanopoli. Croats Kristijan Milakovic and newcomer Ivan Buljubasic made the difference.

After a hard-fought battle, Telimar, with a new coach Marco Baldineti and many new players, managed to beat Savona. A few seconds before the end, Telimar secured an 11:10 win with a goal from an extra player.
