Pro Recco, Florentia, Brescia,Roma, Ortigia, Posillipo, Telimar and Savona qualified for the 2nd stage of the Italian Cup.
The first stage was finished today, by the matches with the 2nd and the 3rd round.
The outcome of the first stage is more or less expected. The only surprise was Telimar, which finished 1st in Group D, ahead of two clubs which will play in the LEN Euro Cup – Savona and Trieste. Group D was the only one with four clubs. Telimar brought in a lot of good players this summer and they proved as good additions.
All of the four group-winners (Pro Recco, Brescia, Ortigia and Telimar) completed the tournaments undefeated. So, Telimar, which was 13th before the cancelation of the 2019/20 Italian League, is in the company of the “Big Three”. Pro Recco, Brescia and Ortigia were the top three teams in Italy last season
The 2nd round will be played next weekend (September 26-27). The top two teams from each group will advance to the Final Four.

Group A (Genoa)

Quinto kept a clean sheet in the match against Florentia. The visiting team even had a chance to score from a penalty, but Quinto goalkeeper Pellegrini saved his net. The hosts, led by Matteo Gito recorded an 8:0 win and secured a spot in the second stage.
Florentia scored two goals in the game against Pro Recco, but the favorite was merciless and confirmed the 1st place with the convincing win. Two young players debuted for Pro Recco today – Mangiante, who scored two goals, and Perrone, who replaced Negri in front of Recco’s goal in the fourth quarter.

Brescia demolished Lazio in the morning session and mathematically secured the 1st place.
The encounter between the two Roma-based sides in the evening session was decisive in the battle for the 2ns ticket for the second stage.
After a balanced first quarter (3:3), Roma dominated from the second period and convincingly defeated Lazio, which played without an experienced goalkeeper Slobodan Soro.

Group C (Naples)

As expected, Ortigia finished 1st in the group in Naples, while host Posillipo earned the 2nd ticket for the 2nd stage. Salerno finished the season in the national cup.
Ortigia defeated Salerno in the opening match of the day. The Sicilians started quite well, but Salerno didn’t surrender. Still, Ortigia secured the three points in the fourth period.
Posillipo and Salerno were neck and neck in the first two quarters. The score was 5:5 at halftime. But, Posillipo played excellently in the third period, and that was vital for the hosts’ win.

On Day 1, Telimar upset Savona. Today, the Palermo-based side continued winning. First, Telimar beat Metanopoli narrowly (10:9), and then defeated Trieste easier than expected (8:3). Telimar wasn’t the firm favorite in this group, but a team from Sicily proved that the club management had done an excellent job in the transfer market. The new team of Telimar, guided by an experienced coach Marco Baldineti (who came from Sport Management), dominated the match against Trieste. Telimar was already 6:0 up before Trieste scored its first goal.
Host Savona got off to a flying start in the morning game against Trieste, and earned a 10:4 lead by the middle break. In the second half, Trieste water polo players made a significant effort to come back, but they failed.
Metanopoli couldn’t stop Savona in the last match of the tournament.
