The Japan Water Polo Federation has decided not to send a women’s team to the upcoming 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha due to financial constraints.
This decision comes with significant consequences as it eliminates Japan’s chances of qualifying for the Paris Olympics next summer.
The situation is reminiscent of the Brazilian Federation’s decision to withdraw their teams from this year’s World Championships in Fukuoka.
Japan’s men’s team, who secured their spot in the Paris Olympics as Asian Games champions, will still participate in Doha as planned.
In theory, Kazakhstan, which finished third at the Asian Games, is expected to fill Japan’s vacancy in Doha.
Japan’s women’s team finished disappointingly in 14th place at their home World Championships in Fukuoka this summer. Two years earlier at the Tokyo Olympics, they finished 9th.
