The fifth day of the U16 World Championships in Larissa are into the semi final rounds; with Hungary, Spain, Greece and Australia progressing into the ‘Platinum’ matches. The four losers from the Semi-finals (Netherlands, Japan, Croatia and Italy) move into the ‘Gold’ matches, otherwise known as the 5th-8th classification games.
The Silver Round Robin games continue, as United States and Israel look like the teams to beat in that section of the tournament.
A strong performance by Zoe Lendvay (3 goals) led Hungary to defeat the Netherlands 10-7. Lendvay’s namesake, Natasa Lendvai, scored tice while Kata Hajdu and Panna Tiba each added two more scores.
Spain had too much quality for Japan in their quarter-final; Martina Claveria and Rita Gurri (both Mataro), Ariadna Temprano (Mediterrani) and Itziar Martinez (Sant Andreu) all scored three goals in the tie for Maria Diaz’s team.
A mature performance from the baby Stingers paved their way into the semi-finals with a 10-5 victory over Italy. Tilly Hughes, Sienna Owen and Olivia Muir were the featured goal scorers.
And in the final quarter final of the day, Greece saw off Croatia in front of a huge crowd, winning 12-7. Despoina Drakotou’s quad was the decisive factor in the game.
Switzerland were shut out by Israel 15-0, making it the second time this week that they have failed to score in a game; Yuval Raz (5) and Carmen Rahum (4) were two of the grateful goal scorers for Israel. Turkiye then were equally as merciless in their dismantling of the Swiss.
Practically all of the players from the United States found the back of the net in their 18-4 crushing of South Africa.
