At least one of the clubs with great tradition and several European trophies in its treasury won’t pass the next hurdle in the LEN Euro Cup, because several powerhouses will play in the same group.
The draw for the Group Phase of the competition was held today in Barcelona. Sixteen teams advanced to this stage through the qualifications, played last weekend. The group winners were in the first batch, and the 2nd-placed are in the 2nd batch.The teams that played in the same qualification group couldn’t be drawn in the same group.
The draw composed a very strong Group B. Vasas, the reigning LEN Euro Cup champion, will play in the group with its neighbor, Honved Budapest, then Italian Savona, the finalist of the 2023 Euro Cup. The fourth club in this group is Apollon Smyrnis (Greece), a club that doesn’t have a rich tradition. But, Apollon is a rising team. It won the LEN Challenger Cup last season.
A few months ago, Vasas won its first-ever LEN Euro Cup, but it clinched the Champions League and the Cup Winners’ Cup a few times in the past decades. Like Vasas, Honved was the European champion but has never won the LEN Euro Cup. Savona has done it three times (2005, 2011, 2012).
The top two teams from each group will continue their European campaigns after the Group Phase.
2024 LEN Euro Cup Group Phase
Group A: Telimar Palermo (Italy), Barcelona (Spain), Solaris (Croatia), Tourcoing (France).
Group B: Honved (Hungary), Vasas (Hungary), Apollon Smyrnis (Greece), Savona (Italy).
Group C: Sabac (Serbia), Primorje (Croatia), BVSC (Hungary), Waspo 98 Hannover (Germany).
Group D: Trieste (Italy), Primorac Kotor (Montenegro), Ortigia (Italy), Panionios (Greece).
The first round is scheduled for October 7.
After six rounds in the group stage (October – December), the top two teams from each group will qualify for the eighth-finals (March 8 and 24). Besides these eight teams, the 3rd-placed and 4th-placed teams in the Group stage of the Champions League will play in the Round of 16
The eight-finals and the quarter-finals (April 6 and 27) will be played on a home-and-away basis. The bet four teams will play in the Final Four (May 17 and 18)
