San Giljan Tum Invest v Sirens Greentube 7:6
Quarters: (1-2), (2-0), (2-1), (2-3)
This is San Giljan’s fourth Winter League – the third in a row – and their 40th consecutive win in a surprisingly hard-fought encounter against Sirens Greentube who gave them a real run for their money.
Sirens Greentube started the game well and scored two goals (Clint Mercieca and Charles Zammit). But San Giljan answered quickly with Ben Plumpton and a man-up situation, something which Sirens did not manage to repeat seconds later.
However, San Giljan recovered in the second session to take the lead through a Matthew Zammit brace. The third session began with San Giljan pulling further away through Andreas Galea but John Brownrigg again made it a one-goal match from a counter attack. Dino Zammit re-established a two-goal lead for San Giljan with a fine strike.
The final session started with Dino Zammit missing a penalty. John Brownrigg scored a beauty to keep the encounter on a knife edge. Isiah Riolo equalized to bring Sirens level, but San Giljan again retook a two-goal lead through Matthew Zammit and Ben Plumpton. Jacob Sciberras reduced the deficit again, but San Giljan held on to register their 40th consecutive win and another Winter League Trophy.
