The Men’s European Aquatics (former LEN) Super Cup will be held in less than a month.
Pro Recco, the European champion, and Vasas, the 2023 LEN Euro Cup winner, will face off in Chiavari, a seaside municipality in the Metropolitan City of Genoa, on November 10.
Today, Pro Recco announced that it would play its next two home Champions League matches (against Olympiacos on October 17 and against Jug on November 22) in the “Mario Rivera” pool in Chiavari and that the same pool would be the venue of the Super Cup against Vasas on November 10.
Chiavari is located 20 km far from Recco. The press conference regarding the next three games was held in Chiavari. Maurizio Felugo, Pro Recco president, said that bringing the Champions League and the European Super Cup to the city represented an excellent opportunity to promote water polo and increasingly broaden the fan base.
The LEN Super Cup was inaugurated in 1976. Pro Recco has won the trophy eight times, losing one game. Vasas clinched the Super Cup in 1985, losing four times.
Recco won the previous two editions of the LEN Super Cup, played on the fields of the Euro Cup winners. In 2021, Recco beat Szolnok 10:4 in Szolnok. Last year, Sabadell hosted the Super Cup match and lost to Recco by eight goals (8:16).
Between 1976 and 2002, the European champions and the LEN Cup Winners’ Cup winners competed for the LEN Super Cup. After the Cup Winners’ Cup was discontinued, the competition was modified to feature the Champions League winners and the LEN Trophy/Euro Cup winners.
Since 2003, the LEN Euro Cup winner has clinched the LEN Super Cup only once. It happened in 2018 – Ferencvaros beat Olympiacos after a penalty shootout in Budapest.
