Olympiacos and Apollon – four of four

October 31, 2022

There were no big surprises and many dramatic games in an incomplete Round 4 of the Greek Championships. Only five games were on the program in the last two days. Some of the matches are postponed or were played earlier because several Greek clubs participated in the LEN Cups between Thursday and Sunday.

After four rounds, two teams have a perfect record – four wins in as many games. Olympiacos continued its winning streak in Group A. Apollon has 12 points, as well, and holds 1st place in Group B. Vouliagmeni is also unbeaten, but the team coached by Vladimir Vujasinovic has played one game fewer than Olympiacos and Apollon.

2022/23 Greek Men’s Championships, Day 4

Group A

Played earlier: Panionios – Ethnikos 14:7

Olympiacos ran over Panathinaikos (20:5). The Red Whites’ defense was up to the task, as in all previous matches. The champion significantly improved its attack compared to the previous game (an 8:2 victory over Ydraikos). Captain Ioannis Fountoulis netted six goals – more than all Panathinaikos’ players together.

The encounter between AEK and Chios was the most exciting game of the day. The first half was a festival of goals. Chios led 10:9. But, the third and the fourth period belonged to AEK, which conceded only one goal in the second 16 minutes. Before the final quarter, the score was 11:11. AEK’s Matinagis was the only one who found the net in the final quarter. He did it twice, and AEK recorded a 13:11 win.

Ydraikos started slowly, but it beat newcomer Nireas Chalandriou convincingly and collected the first three points in the season.

The hosts scored seven goals and they were 11:6 up at halftime. The second half was peaceful. Apollon controlled the game and collected three points with a 16:10 win.
