While Pro Recco played in the LEN Super Cup, the other best Italian clubs battled for the points in the 5th round of the national championships.

After five matchdays, three teams have perfect records -Pro Recco, Ortigia and Savona. Ortigia beat its neighbors from Catania easily – 12:4 in the 5th round. Savona had a little bit more demanding task against Salerno. Still, Savona recorded a 14:10 win and kept up with Pro Recco and Ortigia.

Brescia, which suffered a loss to Pro Recco in the last week’s derby, played very well today and defeated Telimar in Palermo 10:5.

Trieste defeated Anzio in a flood of goals – 17:11. The match between Posillipo and Qunto was something completely different. Quinto recorded a win in a 10-goal match (6:4).

Salerno started surprisingly well in the match in Savona. The visitors led 3:2 at the first break and 4:3 in the 11th minute. Savona scored seven goals in a row between the 11th and 22nd minute to earn a nice 10:4 lead. Salerno narrowed the gap with two goals at the finish of the third period (6:10), but it couldn’t endanger Savona’s victory. The hosts maintained a 4-goal difference until the end.

Brescia kept the momentum gained in a 13:8 Champions League victory and earned another 5-goal away win. Brescia defeated Telimar in Palermo 10:5. After a 1:1 first quarter, a defensive battle continued in the second period. There were no goals until the 14th minute, when Lazic converted a man-up (2:1). Shortly after, Dolce gave the visitors a 3:1 lead. Telimar halved the deficit before the end of the first half (3:4). One goal separated the rivals until the middle of the third quarter (4:5). Then, Brescia produced a 4:0 run, earned a 9:4 lead (25th minute) to secure a convincing victory.
An encounter between the Sicilian clubs – Ortigia and Catania – lacked excitement. Ortigia, which was a big favorite, cruised to a 12:4 victory.

Last week, Trieste suffered a home loss to Savona. Today, the team from northern Italy made it up for that defeat by beating Anzio Waterpolis. Trieste, led by Ivan Buljubasic, started excellently both in defense and in attack and rushed to a 5:1 lead (9th minute). After the fifth scored goal, the visitors’ defense weakened. Anzio reduced the gap to two before the middle break (7:9). Anzio dictated the pace in the third quarter, scoring three straight goals. The hosts went ahead (10:9) in the 22nd minute. However, they couldn’t surprise the favorite. Before the final break, Trieste regained an advantage with two power-play goals (11:10). The visiting side dominated the last period and recorded a 17:11 victory.

Quinto earned three points in Naples, where it played an exciting game against Posillipo. Quinto had a slim 2:1 advantage at halftime. The visitors doubled their advantage early in the third (3:1). However, Posillipo responded with three goals and entered the final period with a 4:3 advantage. But, Quinto answered in the same manner. The visitors, led by Petar Mijuskovic, scored three unanswered goals in the final eight minutes and recorded a 6:4 victory.

Bogliasco collected the first three points in the season. Bogliasco edged out De Akker in a very thrilling encounter – 13:12. De Akker, led by Edoardo Manzi (8 goals in the match), had an 11:9 advantage early in the fourth period. However, Bogliasco scored three goals in a row and went ahead – 12:11 (30th minute).  Manzi leveled at 12:12 from a penalty shot in the 31st minute. In the end, Bogliasco celebrated as Mudrazija scored a winner with five seconds to go.
