Ferencvaros secured its 25th win in the Hungarian League this season, beating OSC Budapest 15:10.
Five goals separated the rivals, but the derby of the 25th round of the Hungarian League was a big battle in the first three quarters. OSC challenged the defending European champions more fiercely than most teams have this season, both in Hungary and on the European stage. The match remained level going into the fourth quarter.
During the first three periods, there were many turns. One team had a 2-goal lead only once -Ferencvaros was 5:3 up in the second quarter. OSC leveled at 5:5 and 6:6. Szilard Jansik briefly put Ferenecvaros ahead with 23 seconds left in the first half β 7:6. Still, Baksa Benedek equalized in the last second of the first half β 7:7.
Early in the third quarter, Benedek gave OSC an 8:7 lead. Jansik equalized from a counterattack in the middle of this period. Shortly after, Simone Rossi converted a man-up to put OSC in front again β 9:8. In the 24th minute, Gergo Fekete made it 9:9 to start Ferencvarosβ series of seven goals. The European champions opened the final period with a 6:0 run. OSC scored a consolation goal in the last minute for the final score β 15:10. Krisztian Manhercz, Gergo Fekete, and Vendel Vigvari contributed three goals each to Ferencvarosβ victory. Baksa Benedek scored three for OSC.
After this loss, OSCβs chances of reaching 4th place and the semifinals of the playoffs became very slim.
The other derby of the round was also an encounter between the Budapest-based teams. BVSC welcomed Vasas. It was a big battle, but Vasas was in front for most of the time. The visitors had a 9:8 advantage after the third quarter. They opened the fourth period excellently, scoring three straight goals to jump to 12:8. But the finish belonged to BVSC. The home team netted four unanswered goals in the last four minutes and a half to level at 12:12. Still, Vasas won the game after a penalty shootout β 18:17. BVSCβs Erik Csacsovszky was the top scorer with five goals. Vasasβs Nikola Dedovic, Bogdan Djurdjic and Bence Batori found the net four times each.
Ferencvaros, Vasas, and Szolnok booked the semifinal ticket. BVSC will likely complete the list of the semifinalists. BVSC is in 4th place and has one point more than 5th-placed OSC. Both teams are expected to win in the 26th round (BVSC plays against PVSK, while OSC meets Debrecen).
Szolnok mathematically secured a spot in the playoffs, beating PVSK Pecs 21:13. At halftime, the teams were tied at 6:6. Szolnok, led by Bendeguz Krasznai (seven goals) and Bence Szabo (five goals), dominated the second half.
After an impressive win over OSC last week (15:9), Honved lost to Debrecen at home. DVSE Debrecen, which holds 13th place, recorded an 11:9 victory in the pool in Koer Street, with three goals from Patrick Maczi. The best scorer of the match was Honvedβs Rolf Bencz (four goals).
