Panathinaikos beat AEK in the derby of Matchday 5. It was an even contest, played in front of the packed stands. AEK led just once (3:2). Panathinaikos was in front most of the time, but the visitors leveled after almost each of the hosts’ goals. In the third quarter, Panathinaikos stretched the margin to two (5:3). Still, AEK caught up with the hosts before the final break (7:7) and the big drama continued. Hatzigoulas was the hero of the Pantahinaikos’ win. First, he converted a man-up to give the hosts an 8:7 lead from a 6 on 5, but AEK equalized immediately. Two and a half minutes before the end, the visitors had a chance to take a lead from a nice action, but the hosts’ goalkeeper Risticevic saved a shot. Hatzigoulas stole the ball and started a solo counterattack. He crossed the entire field and netted for 9:8 and the final score.
Ydraikos started the season very badly both in Greece and in the LEN Euro Cup, but it found its rhythm and upset Ethnikos. Ydraikos controlled the match, and entered the final quarter with a 10:5 advantage. Ethnikos opened the fourth period well and cut the deficit to 7:10. However, the hosts played with a man down in the last 3:32 minutes because Theodosis – Papaloukas was excluded for brutality. Ydraikos converted a penalty awarded after that foul and ruined all the hosts’ hopes.
Olympiacos showed no mercy to Nireas Chladriou, which scored only one goal. That happened in the 27th minute. The most important news about this match is that Olympiacos’ goalkeeper Emmanouil Zerdevas recovered from an injury suffered at the World Championships in Budapest and played his first match this season.
Chios and Panionios were in a neck-and-neck race until the last break (6:6). However, Panionios dominated the final quarter, scoring nine and conceding three goals, to record a 15:9 victory.
