The second day of the Szentes Cup saw another six warm-up games ahead of the 35th European Championships and the Hungarian women’s OB I.
BVSC remain undefeated so far at the tournament, with two victories today against their Budapest-based rivals Ferencvaros (13-9), and European Championship hopefuls Serbia (17-10). Despite some key players departures from the club this Summer, BVSC’s new head coach, Mercedesz Stieber, will be very satisfied with her team’s work in pre-season.
France also enjoyed two wins today, who like BVSC, defeated Fradi, as well as the hosts, Szentes 14-10. Emilien Bugeaud, who has travelled with a sizeable training squad to Szentes, will mostly be interested in how they fare against the other national teams; already beating Germany, and facing Serbia tomorrow.
Of all the teams warming up in Szentes, Germany perhaps look the most off the pace, and are yet to win a game – so far losing to France, Serbia, BVSC and FTC. The former European Championship bronze medallists from 1985 will know they need to get up to speed quickly if they are to have any serious aspirations for Split.
Fradi, who many have tipped to be title contenders this season in the Hungarian league, have not been at their best. But with many of their first team squad missing, including new three new signings (Gurisatti, Farkas and Leimeter) away with the national team, the tournament in Szentes is a chance for some of Gyorgy Gerendas’s squad players to enjoy some valuable pre-season game time.
