The opening day of the 101st Italian Championship brought a few exciting matches. The favourites Pro Recco and Brescia defeated their respective rivals with ease, while games in Naples, Syracuse, Rome… offered a lot of thrills.

Titleholder Pro Recco and Brescia, the runner-up in the previous season, opened the season in style. Pro Recco demolished Florentia in Florence – 21:3, while Brescia taught a lesson to newcomer Salerno – 13:4.
Sport Management, which won the 3rd place last season, played against a newcomer, as well as Brescia. But, a rejuvenated squad of Sport Management had to fight hard to beat Telimar. Sport Management, the visiting team in this encounter, had a 4:0 lead early in the 2nd period. But, Telimar didn’t give up. The hosts were climbing back from time to time and they trailed by two goals (6:8) before the last quarter.
By the middle of the fourth period, Sport Management doubled an advantage – 10:6, but Telimar’s Migliaccio netted three goals in a row and his team came very close to the favourite – 9:10 with 45 seconds remaining on the clock. However, Sport Management kept the win.
Canottieri Naples and Savona shared the points. Savona, the visiting team in this match had an 8:6 lead two and a half minutes before the end. Still, the hosts managed to save a point by goals from Esposito and Borelli.
Qrtigia took all three points in the clash with Quinto in Syracuse, despite the visitors were leading for most of the time. Quinto was two steps ahead of Ortigia six minutes before the end (6:4). Midway through the last quarter, the home side equalised (6:6). Just four seconds before the final buzzer, Ortigia managed to earn the penalty. Valentino Gallo took the responsibility and sent the ball into the net for Ortigia’s 7:6 win.
Roma produced a big comeback and defeated Posillipo in Rome. The visitors from Naples had a 2-goal advantage (10:8) after the third period. But, the Romanians dominated the last quarter and secured a 13:12 win.
