Brescia recorded a narrow 15:14 victory over Savona in the big game of the 6th round of Serie A1. Some of the other highlights of the round were Posillipo’s triumph over Canottieri in the Naples derby, Pro Recco’s convincing win over Telimar, and Salerno’s victory in a closely contested match against Florentia.
Savona opened the match against Brescia in its pool better than the visiting team, taking a 4:2 lead late into the first period. Brescia leveled at 4:4. Midway through the second period, Savona went ahead once again – 5:4. However, Brescia’s 3:0 run followed that, and the visitors had a 7:5 advantage at halftime.
In the third period, Brescia extended its lead to three goals at 9:6. Savona managed to catch up and equalize at 10:10. However, Brescia closed the third period just as they had the second quarter, scoring three straight goals in just 78 seconds to head into the final eight minutes with a 13:10 lead. Savona reduced the deficit to one goal shortly after the last break, making it 12:13. The hosts then narrowed the gap two more times, bringing the score to 13:14 and 14:15, but they could not equalize. Brescia collected the points with a 15:14 win in the game that featured many fouls and a total of nine penalty shots, with Savona converting 3 out of 4 and Brescia 4 out of 5. Stefano Guerratto led Brescia with five goals, followed closely by Vlado Popadic, who scored four. The encounter between the local rivals, Posillipo and Canottieri, was an even contest until the middle of the second period. The teams were tied at 2:2 before Posillipo went on a 3:0 run within 02:30 minutes to establish a 5:2 lead. Canottieri cut the deficit to one goal just three seconds before the last break, when Duje Zivkovic scored for 7:8. Posillipo missed two penalty shots in the fourth quarter. Still, it maintained control of the match and recorded a 12:9 win. Radovic, Rocchino, and Mattiello scored two goals each for Posillipo. Canottieri’s Confuorto found the net four times.
Pro Recco visited Sicily and achieved a convincing 21:9 victory over Telimar. Pro Recco jumped to a 4:0 lead within the first five minutes. However, by the end of the first period, Telimar had narrowed the gap to two goals. The home team quickly scored two goals at the beginning of the second period, leveling the score at 4:4. However, Pro Recco responded with an impressive series, scoring 14 goals to just 2 from Telimar over 15 minutes, which gave the visitors an 18:6 lead before the final quarter. Recco’s captain, Francesco Di Fulvio, was the top scorer of the match, netting four goals. Francesco Cassia and Matteo Iocchi Gratta added three each.
Olympic Roma defeated Ortigia in Syracuse 13:11. The visitors had a 10:5 advantage early in the fourth period. The Sicilians didn’t surrender and cut the deficit to one goal – 11:12. But, it was too late – 23 seconds before the end. Olympic Roma closed the match with its 13th goal.
De Akker earned three points against Roma Vis Nova thanks to a strong defense, 8:5.
Salerno edged out Florentia 13:12 in Firenze. Brazilian Roberto Agulha de Freitas displayed an outstanding performance, scoring seven goals for Salerno. The score was tied a number of times during the match, but Florentia had no answer after Parrilli made it 13:12 two minutes before the end.
UPDATE: Trieste defeated Iren Quinto in Genoa 10:9 in the postponed game. Trieste built a 6:4 lead in the first 16 minutes. The visitors increased their advantage to three goals in the third period (8:5). Quinto managed to close the gap to one goal thrice in the rest of the game (7:8, 8:9 and 9:10), but Trieste didn’t let the hosts equalize.
