Pro Recco defeated Telimar in Palermo easier than expected. The title-holder strolled to a 6:0 lead in the first ten minutes of the game (four goals with a man-up, one from a penalty, and one action goal). It was clear that Telimar wouldn’t come back. Still, the hosts managed to cut the deficit before the middle break, but Recco secured a big win with a 3:0 rush in the third period. Interestingly, the best scorer was Mario Del Basso, who netted all five goals for Telimar.
It was Recco’s third away win this week. On Tuesday, the European champion started the series with an 11:8 victory over Hannover in the Champions League. Two days after, on their way to Palermo, Recco stopped in Naples, where it trashed Posillipo in the postponed match of the 9th round (14:2).
Brescia visited Sicily, just like Pro Recco, and it played against Catania, which won only four points. The second-best Italian club won, but it needed a lot of time to break the home team. There were a few twists and turns in the first half. At the finish of the second quarter, Catania led 6:5. Brescia’s center-forward Djordje Lazic leveled at 6:6 in the visitors’ last possession in this quarter. The visitors had a one-goal advantage before the fourth quarter (8:7). Torrisi equalized after 24 seconds of play in the final period (8:8). Still, Brescia scored three consecutive goals in the remaining time for an 11:8 victory.
Two matches took place in Catania today. Ortigia hosted Anzio in the indoor pool in Catania because there is only an outdoor pool in Syracuse. Ortigia’s defense didn’t shine, but the hosts claimed a convincing 20:10 victory.
One of the derbies of the round was an encounter between Iren Quinto and Trieste in Genova. Quinto collected the points thanks to an excellent defensive play. It was a hard defensive battle from the beginning. Trieste took a 3:2 lead in the 12th minute. However, Quinto kept Trieste goalless in the following 15 minutes. The hosts scored four goals in that interval and jumped to 6:3. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Trieste’s Petronio ended his team’s long goalless phase. Still, the visitors couldn’t find the net in the last six minutes, while Quinto netted two for an 8:4 victory.
Posillipo recovered from a big loss to Recco and, surprisingly, won a point in a match against the LEN Euro Cup quarterfinalist Savona. Both teams had ups and downs in this match. Savona was a better rival in the first quarter (4:2), but Posillipo leveled before the middle break (5:5). The third quarter was balanced (3:3). Savona opened the fourth quarter excellently. The visitors scored three straight goals in four minutes and went to 11:8. A minute before the end, Savona had an 11:9 advantage. Still, the Naples-based side scored two unanswered goals in the last 54 seconds and earned a point. Saccoia netted an equalizer with nine seconds left on the clock. This point helped Posillipo to climb to 12th place.
De Akker Bologna defeated Salerno (10:9) narrowly, thanks to Edoardo Manzi, who was outstanding today. Salerno dictated the pace for most of the time and entered the fourth quarter with a slim advantage – 8:7. Manzi opened the scoring in the fourth period by converting a man-up for 8:8. Tomasic gave Salerno a 9:8 lead. However, the last two goals in the match were scored by the home team. Two minutes before the end, Manzi added his 7th goal to set the final score – 10:9.
Manzi wasn’t the only player who scored seven goals in the 11th round. Francesco Faraglia scored seven goals to lead Roma to a 16:11 away win over Bogliasco. At halftime, the sides were tied (6:6). Roma took control in the second half and took the points with a quite comfortable 16:11 win.
