Jadran’s new head coach Mile Smodlaka (he replaced Ivan Asic, who left to the USA) debuted with a win. Although Crvena Zvezda suffered the loss, it kept 5th place and will be the only Serbian club in the group for places 1st – 5th.
Title-holder Mladost Zagreb opened the year with a convincing win over Primorac 15:2. The Zagreb-based side played excellently in defense, while Lovre Milos and Luka Bukic, the members of the Croatian national team, led Mladost in the attack. Each of them netted four goals.
Jug cruised to a win over Mornar in Split. The visitors dominated the first half. In the middle of the second quarter, Jug had a 9-goal advantage (10:1) and slowed down in the remaining time.
Jadran, the champion of Montenegro, defeated Serbian champion Sabac. Jadran controlled the match from the beginning and was always ahead.
Budva recorded its second win in the season. The Montenegrin club defeated Partizan 12:9. Budva, the home team in this match, rushed to a 5:1 lead and maintained a 4-goal gap until the middle break (7:3). The hosts jumped an 8:3 lead early in the third period before Partizan started climbing back. But, the visitors didn’t equalize. They just came close twice (8:10 and 9:11).
Budva climbed to 8th place, while Partizan, the seven-times European champion, shares 9th and the last place with Mornar.
Partizan has been struggling to survive for years, but during the previous two months, the crisis reached the culmination. There were a lot of changes in the club after a conflict between two sides of the club’s management. Four players were allowed to go in December, because, as the current administration explained, the club can’t pay them salaries in the future period. Three of the four players left the club. Filip Radojevic moved to Crvena Zvezda, Nikola Radulovic signed for Sabac, while Nenad Radonjic left to Greece (PAOK). Only Aleksandar Radanovic stayed in the club. Head coach Stefan Ciric was dismissed and was replaced by Marko Basic.
