The Regional League Board decided that the next edition of the competition would be played in spring next year.
This decision was expected, considering the crisis caused by the pandemic. The four national federations (Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia) agreed that the next season would be played according to a new competition format.
Before the Regional League, all of the four countries will play their national championships. In the past several years, it was the opposite. The battles for the national titles were starting after the Regional League.
A few tournaments would be played in the 2020/21 Regional League, instead of the double round-robin league with the Final Four and the relegation playoffs at the end of the season.
The number of participating clubs and the exact competition formula will be determined afterward, in accordance with the definitive FINA and LEN calendars, and considering the epidemical situation. If everything goes as planned, the Regional League tournaments will be played approximately in March or April.
“All four national federations (Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro, and Serbia) strongly support the Regional Water Polo League and are determined to do everything to secure the League’s existence in the future”, the Board announced.
The Serbian Water Polo Federation already published the National League calendar for the next season, which is scheduled to be played from September 26 to June 2. The Croatian League should start on October 3.
