Sabadell narrowly defeated Barceloneta 15:14 in a big Spanish derby played in the 8th round of the national championships.
Barceloneta, which has been seldom beaten at home, suffered its second home loss of the season, following a Champions League defeat to Marseille.
Sabadell and Barceloneta have faced off five times this season. Sabadell wasn’t close to a victory in the previous four matches (in the Spanish Super Cup, the Catalunya Cup, and two Champions League games).
In the 8th round’s derby, Sabadell was always ahead of the hosts. The visitors got off to a stunning start. After less than five minutes, Sabadell led 4:0. Barroso scored an opener, and Cabanas continued the series with three goals. Barceloneta tried to come back, but couldn’t equalize. The Champions League bronze medalists narrowed their deficit to one goal (4:5) in the second quarter. From that point until the 24th minute, the teams traded goals. Barceloneta finished the third quarter trailing 9:10. However, Barroso converted a man-up opportunity in Sabadell’s last possession of the third period. Asensio opened the fourth quarter with an action goal, extending the lead to 12:9.
With three minutes and six seconds remaining, Sabadell established a five-goal lead at 15:10. Although Barceloneta made a late surge, scoring four unanswered goals, it was ultimately too late. Munarriz netted the final goal of the match just two seconds before the buzzer, resulting in a final score of 14:15.
Sergi Cabanas and Alberto Barroso were Sabadell’s power engines. Cabanas scored five, and Barroso added four goals. Alberto Munarriz was Barceloneta’s top scorer with three goals.
After the 10th round, the battle for the top spot became a three-horse race, as Barceloneta, Sabadell, and Barcelona have 21 points each.
Mataro hosted Barcelona in the other derby of the round. This game lacked suspense. Barcelona led throughout and won 17:11, with five goals from Pol Daura. Mataro was unbeaten after six rounds, but then suffered two consecutive losses. Last week, it was defeated by Barceloneta.
Terrassa was two goals behind Catalunya at the middle break (2:4). Terrassa dominated in the third quarter and entered the final period leading 7:5. Midway through the fourth quarter, Catalunya regained the lead (10:9). However, Terrassa scored the last three goals in the match and secured a 12:10 victory.
