An encounter between two Euro Cup clubs was the most anticipated match of the 8th round of the Italian League.
Savona hosted Trieste on Sunday morning and recorded a 19:10 victory. On Thursday, both teams achieved narrow wins over the Romanian clubs in the 3rd round of the Euro Cup (Savona beat Steaua in Bucharest, 11:10, and Trieste edged Dinamo at home, 17:16).
Savona got off to an excellent start in today’s derby. The hosts rushed to a 3:0 lead in the first five minutes. Trieste came close to the rival by the end of the first quarter (3:4). Savona rebuilt a 3-goal lead shortly after the beginning of the second period (6:3). At halftime, the home side was four steps ahead (9:5), and downed Trieste with a 6:1 third period. During the third quarter, Trieste had three penalty shots, but it converted only one. Savona’s goalkeeper, Marco Del Lungo, saved one of the three shots from the 5m line. Each side netted four goals in the final quarter. Oliver Leinweber led Savona’s offense with five goals. Occhione and Bruni added three each. Petronio and Manzi netted three for Trieste.
Pro Recco and Brescia continued their winning streaks with convincing away wins.
Pro Recco defeated the bottom-placed Florentia after a slow start. Recco trailed 3:4 at the first break, but dominated in the following three quarters to record a 21:12 victory with five goals from Francesco Di Fulvio.
Filipo Ferrero found the net five times to help Brescia beat Roma Vis Nova 22:10.
Two games concluded with penalty shootouts.
Posillipo earned two points in an away game against Telimar in Palermo. The Sicilians had a 7:6 lead before the final period. There were a few turns in the fourth quarter. Telimar was on the verge of a victory as it led 10:9 with a minute to go. Posillipo’s Vincenzo Renzuto Iodice closed the scoring in the regular time. He netted an equalizer for 10:10 with 51 seconds remaining and prolonged the game into a shootout. The Naples-based team beat Telimar 14:13 after penalties.
Olympic Roma defeated De Akker in Bologna. The game was a close contest from start to finish. Two and a half minutes before the end, De Akker led 15:13. But Olympic Roma scored the last two goals in the match. Luka Stahor beat the buzzer, making it 15:15 with four seconds to go. After eight rounds of shots in a penalty drama, Olympic celebrated a 22:21 win.
