The Women’s Division de Honor in Spain in back fully for 2022 as we had six games today for the first time this year. The top teams, Sabadell, Mataro, Terrassa and Mediterrani all won, with Sant Andreu and Boadilla also taking three points each.
Astralpool Sabadell 28-4 ESC Zaragoza (7-1, 8-0, 7-2, 6-1)
Sabadell: L. Ester, M. Ortiz 2, A. Prados 2, S. Van der Sloot 2, M. Serrano 2, M. Steffens 2, I. Casado, M. Garcia Godoy 8, J. Forca Ariza 4, L. Maroto 1, N. Perez 2, I. Gonzalez 3, M. Carrasco
Zaragoza: I. Moreno, A. Moya, M. Ciudad 4, I. Rosales, S. Lorente, N. Calavia, N. Naya, A. Sarinena, R. Corao, S. Perez, A. Chicote, J. Tazueco, S. Ballesta
The second game week of the new year was once again plain sailing for Sabadell, who were really dominant against Zaragoza of Aragon. Maica Garcia Godoy, their centre-forward, was in inspired form, netting eight times in the match. Her international teammate, Judith Forca Ariza, put four away, while Irene Gonzalez recorded a hat-trick. David Palma’s side are still top of the league, with 13 games played; 13 wins.
CN Mataro 18-6 CN Catalunya (3-0, 5-1, 6-1, 2-4)
Mataro: M. Sanchez, S. Morell 2, S. Van de Kraats 2, A. Gual, V. Sevenich 3, A. Timofeeva 2, C. Cambray 2, C. Nogue 3, M. Bach, Q. Bertran, I. Piralkova 1, M. Claveria 1, B. Colominas
Catalunya: C. Ball, A. Ruis, R. Schujt, M. Van Rijn 2, B. Pascual, M. Sagrera, N. Begona 1, L. Escoda, N. Vidondo 1, S. Diaz 1, L. Sanchez, C. Diaz 1, M. Terre
Mataro were back to their usual selves with a convincing display over Catalunya. Dani Ballart’s side took a three-nil lead in the first quarter, and by half-time, the game was over as a contest with the score at 8-1. Morell, Van de Kraats, Sevenich, Timofeeva, Cambray, Nogue were all on the scoresheet. Bella Markoch was not in the matchday squad.
The defeat dashes Catalunya’s hopes of a top four finish as they now sit in 7th – 6 points off six-placed Rubi and 12 points off fourth placed Mediterrani. They will hope they can reignite a bit of form into their season as they host Boadilla of East Madrid next Saturday.
CN Sant Feliu 6-17 CN Terrassa (1-4, 2-4, 2-6, 1-3)
Sant Feliu: S. Domene, D. Quinzada, J. Panicello 5, B. Ortiz 1, M. Tevar, M. Cardona, N. Ten Broek 2, P. Pena 2, N. Cuenda 1, P. Camus 3, B. Pastor, P. Leiton Arrones 3, E. Arcas
Terrassa: I. Costa, J. Soler, M. Bargallo 2, M. Bernabe, B. Goset 1, L. Roc Herrera, R. Maldonaldo 1, C. Perez, D. Perez, B. Tora, M. Gomez 2, I. Turgeano
Terrassa proved a step too far for Jorge Timblau’s Sant Feliu as they were simply outplayed by the travelling Terrassa. Judith Panicello put five past Irene Vargas in the Feliu net, as they now sit in 8th having played a game more than Boadilla, who are level on points.
Terrassa find themselves in a peculiar situation, as they are six points off the top of the league (and are unlikely to bridge that gap aside from a meltdown from Sabadell and Mataro), but are comfortably in a European place with a game in hand. Having been knocked out the LEN Euro League, they will perhaps feel their season’s fate rests in the LEN Trophy
AR Concepcion 6-20 CE Mediterrani (3-4, 1-7, 1-5, 1-4)
Concepcion: L. Curz, C. Garcia, I. San Pedro, R. Clemente 1, A. Morales 1, C. Rivera, E. Garcia, P. Sanchez, C. Puente, C. Rodriguez 2, R. Rodriguez 1, M. Peragon 1, L. Garcia
Mediterrani: N. Torjan, A. Munoz 5, J. Cereijo 3, I. Wolves 2, C. Vilanova 2, C. Rodriguez 1, M. Viladot, A. Marcos 2, A. Grossman 1, H. Dalmases 1, L. Marsinach, S. Puanani 3, D. Willemsz
It was another miserable day at the office for AR Concepcion as Mediterrani showed no mercy and beat them 20 goals to 6. While the first period of the game was relatively competitive, the proceeding three were anything but. Alba Munoz snaffled five goals in the game, while Julia Cereijo and Sarah Puanani Lizotte both celebrated hat-tricks apiece.
There is no doubt Maria Diaz and her side are very talented. The young coach certainly has a great team that are developing well. But they will need to focus intently to ensure Sant Andreu, who are level on points with Mediterrani, do not pick them to that all-important 4th Euro League spot.
Natacion Boadilla 12-8 CN Atletic-Barceloneta (5-3, 2-2, 2-2, 3-1)
Boadilla: M. Gutierrez, E. De La Cruz, E. Portillo 2, L. Campos, S. Gonzalez 1, C. Hagen, A. Maria 1, M. De Quinta 1, E. Ruano 1, M. Jaimez, M. Ramos 2, G. Gallinato 4, P. Moreno
Barceloneta: A. Farre, A. Garcia, V. Sanchez, C. Martin 2, N. Josifovic 1, J. Altisen, A. Pastor, N. Mandic 3, B. Seto, S. Pena 1, M. Madre 1, P. Rutgers
In the grand scheme of things, Boadilla beating Barceloneta is not hugely significant. But there is no doubt Patricia Herrera Fernandez will view their victory today as highly significant against a team that is building momentum and is their direct rivals in the table. Giorgia Gallinato netted four times in the match, taking her season tally to 21. Boadilla will really face a big test next week against Catalunya – a victory there would really help them push on for a top-half finish.
While Barceloneta have shown a bit of progress in performances in recent times, Marc Iglesias will not be happy with today’s result. He has his side miss three penalties, which had they gone in, may well have altered the outcome of the game. They will need to brace themselves for Sabadell next week.
CN Rubi 3-11 CN Sant Andreu (1-3, 0-3, 1-2, 1-3)
Rubi: E. Jimenez, A. Roldan, D. Gershcovsky 1, L. Rion, M. Manchego 1, C. Abellan, E. Ruiz, A. Rodriguez, E. Vesperinas, I. Abril, L. Soriano, A. Copado
Sant Andreu: A. Lorca, H. Ballesty, N. Perez 1, M. Van der Weijden, G. La Farre 1, H. Ruckelshaus Shabb 1, M. Cordobes 1, D. Mammolito 1, R. Prieto 1, M. Ungria, M. Palacio 2, A. Ruiz Barril 3, M. Terre
Sant Andreu have really improved over the season in terms of results, and once again were in a winning groove today away at Rubi. Andreu demonstrated strong versatility in attack, with eight different scorers out of eleven outfield players on their roster. Both sides face stern opposition next week – Andreu host a recovering Mataro, while Rubi travel to Terrassa.
