German Spandau 04 Berlin won’t participate in the third “bubble” tournament of the Champions League, which will be played next week.
The Berliners won’t come to the tournament of Group A in Ostia due to the several positive coronavirus cases at the club. The anti-COVID measures in Germany are very strict and all Spandau’s players and staff have to be quarantined after confirmed cases. Because of that, Spandau had no other option and had to cancel participation
Today, Spandau announced withdrawal from the last tournament in a press release and informed LEN by an official letter.
“The last three matches of Spandau (v Pro Recco, Marseille and Ortigia) are forfeited and awarded to the respective opponents with 10:0”, LEN announced on the official LEN Champions League Facebook page.
The last”bubble” tournament of Group A in Ostia starts on Monday (in Budapest on Tuesday). In Group A, two matches will be played on each day, the schedule remains the same.
Spandau is currently fifth in Group A and had chances to reach the fourth place and the Final Eight tournament in Belgrade.
Spandau already had problems with COVID-19 earlier this season, and because of that, their first three matches in the German Championship, originally scheduled for March 20-21, have been postponed. Two of these three matches (against Neukolln and OSC Potsdam) were rescheduled for the upcoming weekend. A new decision regarding these two games hasn’t been made yet.
