In February next year, the Water polo club Solaris will organize the 2nd Memorial Tournament, “SunΔana kapica “(The Sunny Cap). The competition will take place in the indoor pool “Crnica” in Sibenik between February 23 and 26.
The U12 teams (players born in 2010 and younger) will play at the tournament that was launched in memory of Grgo Renje and Renato Vrbicic, the club’s legends. Renje and Vrbicic were Solaris’ players and coaches. Both suddenly passed away in 2018.
A group of water polo lovers in Sibenik produced a short film dedicated to the two legends. The characters were embodied by their sons; Renco and Bruno play Renato, and Stipe plays Grgo.
“After making the film, we came up with an idea to launch a tournament dedicated to the two players and coaches who were greats of the city of Sibenik and club Solaris. Last year, four clubs for which Renato Vrbicic played β HAVK Mladost, Jadran Split, Zadar 1952 and Solaris took part in the tournament. We wanted to take a step further for the second edition and to organize an international tournament. Our wish is to create an event that will last for years”, Bruno Sabioni, the organizer of the tournament, says.
Sabioni explains where the name of the tournament, “Suncana kapica “comes from:
“The name of the tournament is inspired by Solaris’ nickname -“SunΔani “(“The Sunny “). The club’s nickname also inspired the design of medals and special awards.”
After each match, the SunΔana Kapica award will be awarded to the best player of the game.
The first three teams will receive statues and medals “SunΔana kapica”. The best centreβ-forward will be awarded a statue of SunΔana Kapica with the number 7 (in memory of Renato VrbiΔiΔ), while the best goalkeeper will receive a statue with the number 1 (in memory of Grgo Renje). The Most Valuable Player of the tournament will also be awarded.
According to provisional plans, eight or 12 teams will participate in the tournament.

Technical information
VENUE AND SCHEDULE: The memorial tournament “SunΔana Kapica” will be held over four competition days in the indoor city pool Crnica in Ε ibenik (33 x 25 meters, a capacity of approx. 500 seating places). Group matches will begin on Thursday, February 23, in the afternoon, while the final is scheduled for the early afternoon on Sunday, February 26, 2023.
RULES:Β The matches will be played according to FINA water polo rules, on a field measuring 25 x 17 meters and with a ball size no. 4 – women. The number of team members is not limited, but there is a maximum of 15 players that can participate in each match. The match duration is 4 x 7 minutes, with a 2-minute break between the quarters.
COMPETITION SYSTEM
SYSTEM OF 8 TEAMS: The teams will be split into two groups of four (A and B). After the group stage, the first two best-placed teams from the groups would qualify for the semi-finals, and the remaining teams would play for 5th to 8th place.
SYSTEM OF 12 TEAMS: The teams will be split into four groups of three clubs each (A, B, C, and D).
After the group stage, the first-placed teams would play off the second-placed teams. The winners of those matches would qualify for the semi-finals, while the losers would go on to fight for 5th to 8th place. The third-placed teams would form their own group where, according to the system, they would play each other for 9th to 12th place.
