Ferencvaros, BVSC, Honved and Szolnok advanced to the Final Four of the Hungarian Cup, scheduled for the last week of September.
The most anticipated and exciting duel in the quarterfinals was an encounter between Vasas and Szolnok.
Vasas left without a few key players during the transfer window, while Szolnok kept most of the players. Anyway, Vasas, the runner-up in the 2025 Hungarian League, was considered a favorite. The Budapest-based team was a host in the first match, but Szolnok recorded a 13:7 victory in the capital, with four goals by Gergo Kovacs.
However, Vasas responded strongly in the return match in Szolnok this evening. The visitors overcame the deficit and established a six-goal lead on two occasions, leading 14:8 and then 15:9. Szolnok fought back and narrowed the gap to 11:15 before the final minute. With 49 seconds remaining, Lakatos extended Vasas’ lead to 16:11. Three seconds before the end, Vasas was awarded a penalty shot that could have allowed them to extend the match into a shootout. Unfortunately for the visitors, Bogdan Djurdjic, who scored six goals during the match, missed the penalty, and Szolnok advanced with a narrow aggregate victory of 24:23.
Ferencvaros easily beat Szeged in both games – 27:9 and 16:5. Gergo Fekete scored a total of ten goals (seven in the first and three in the second game).
BVSC showed no mercy to UVSE (20:2 and 21:8).
Honved secured its place in the semifinals with a fine 20:14 win over Szentes in Budapest. Szentes beat Honved at home, 18:17, but wasn’t close to erasing a 6-goal deficit from the first game.
