Szolnok takes points in Eger, Szeged upsets UVSE

For the first time since the beginning of the season, all matches of a regular round of the Hungarian League have been played as scheduled. Seven games of the 13th round have been played today, while one match (Ferencvaros-Honved) was held last week.

Obviously, the situation with coronavirus at the clubs is getting better. But, the decision made by the Hungarian Water Polo Federation two weeks ago, also affected that there were no postponed games. The possibility of the postponement of a match by a mutual agreement between the clubs doesn’t exist anymore. Only the Federation can decide on the postponement.

The match of the day was an encounter between Eger and Szolnok, played in Eger. Szolnok recorded a convincing 19:12 victory and continued a neck and neck race for 1st place with Ferencvaros.

Szeged captured its second win of the season by beating UVSE 13:10. Vasas ran over Miskolc 12:4. OSC and BVSC recorded big wins.

Ferencvaros – Honved 13:5 (played last week)

Szolnok arrived in Eger as a favorite, but the visitors needed some time to break the rival. Szolnok had a 5:3 lead after the first quarter, and opened the second quarter with an action goal for 6:3. Eger managed to equalize twice (6:6 and 7:7). But, after Eger’s seventh goal, Szolnok strengthened its defense while netted five unanswered goals and jumped to a 12:7 lead (18th minute). Eger wasn’t able to recover from that shock. Szolnok celebrated a 19:12 win. The best scorers in this flood of goals were Filip Filipovic, Daniel Angyal (Szolnok) and Benedek Baksa (Eger). Each netted four goals. Szolnok is still without Dusko Pijetlovic, who is recovering from tooth surgery.

Szeged defeated UVSE 13:10, and that result was a surprise of the day. Szeged is among the clubs which had many ill players in the past month, but many of them healed. A few of the players of the visiting team missed the match, but UVSE led for most of the time. The visitors’ advantage was never bigger than two goals (UVSE had 5:3 and 6:4 lead in the second quarter). Two minutes before the last break, UVSE led 9:8. But, Szeged scored two goals in the last 110 seconds of this quarter and went in front for the first time (10:9). Early in the fourth, the hosts doubled the advantage (11:9). UVSE’s 16-year-old Erik Ionescu, who debuted for the senior team today, found the net for 10:11 in the 28th minute. But, the visitors couldn’t equalize. Szeged scored two more goals for a 13:10 victory.

UVSE’s Vince Vigvari (17-year-old) was the best scorer with four goals. Vigvari, Baksa (Eger), and Batori (Vasas) share the first position on the best scorers’ list in this season. Each of the three has scored 36 goals since the beginning of the league.

Vasas collected the first three points after more than a month. Vasas had a lot of problems with coronavirus in the past few weeks. In the meantime, it suffered two convincing defeats in derbies (8:18 against Ferencvaros and 8:17 against Szolnok). Most of the infected players recovered and returned to the team, including goalkeeper Branislav Mitrovic, Montenegro captain Drasko Brguljan, Krisztian Bedo, etc. Mitrovic didn’t enter the water, but Vasas’ second goalie Kristof Csoma did a good job, he collected 14 saves. Miskolc’s first goalkeeper Tomas Hoferica also didn’t play, although he was on the roster. Hoferica’s replacement Kristof Csoma posted 14 saves, as well as Csoma, but he conceded 12 goals.

Miskolc scored an opener in the 2nd minute. However, Vasas responded with seven goals. The hosts built a big 7:1 lead by the 20th minute. Center-back Sava Randjelovic was the best scorer with three goals.

As expected, OSC defeated PVSK. The visitors from Pecs kept up with the hosts until the beginning of the final period. In the second minute of the fourth quarter, PVSK trailed by two goals (6:8), but OSC dominated in the remaining time for a 14:6 victory.

BVSC kept fourth place in the table, with an easy win over Debrecen.

There were a lot of twists and turns in the match Kaposvar – Szentes. After a fierce battle, Szentes took three points. In the middle of the fourth period, Kaposvar was ahead by two (14:12). But, the visitors dominated the final minutes, they produced a 3:0 rush for a 15:14 victory.

KSI and Tatabanya, the teams that had no points before the 13th round, faced off in the last match. After three balanced quarters, KSI secured a 14:12 win in the final eight minutes and earned the first win in the season

The 14th round of the Hungarian League is scheduled for December 5. But, the big match of the 14th day and of the whole league, Ferencvaros – Szolnok will be played on November 28.
