Anzio Waterpolis recorded a remarkable victory in the 22nd round of the Italian League, defeating Savona, the LEN Euro Cup finalist, 11:8. This wasย a big surprise, especially considering Savona was the host.
With this loss, Savona is virtually out of content for the 4th place and the playoffs for the title (only the top four teams will play in the playoffs for 1st place)
Telimar, currently in the 4th place, solidified its position with an important away win against 5th–placed Trieste, 9:8. Telimar is now seven points ahead of Trieste and nine ahead of Savona in 6th.

Each side scored two goals in the first quarter of the duel Savona โ Anzio. The hosts netted two goals in the first two minutes of the second period, earned a 4:2 lead, and seemed to be on the right track. But Anzio responded strongly. The visitors produced a 3:0 run in 01:41 minutes, with two power-play goals and one from a 6 on 6. Anzio took a 5:4 lead in the middle of the second quarter, but Savona equalized shortly after. The sides were tied at 5:5 at the middle break.
Savona went ahead twice in the third quarter (6:5 and 7:6). Still, it couldnโt break the rival.
Anzio closed this quarter with two extra player goals, entered the final period leading 8:7 and showed that a surprise was possible. The favorite leveled early in the fourth period (8:8). However, Savona couldnโt score in the last six minutes and a half. At the other end of the pool, Anzio found the net three times (twice with a man-up and once from a penalty shootout) and shocked the favorite with an 11:8 win.
Anzio climbed to 8th place. If it stays there after the next four rounds, it will play in the playoffs for 5th place and a spot in the LEN Euro Cup.
The derby of the day, Trieste โ Telimar, produced a few twists and turns. At halftime, the score was 5:5. The neck-and-neck race continued in the third quarter. Before the fourth period, it stood 7:7. By the middle of the final quarter, Telimar built a 2-goal lead (9:7). Trieste immediately halved the deficit (8:9). In the following minutes, both teams missed a one man-up each. Trieste had the last attack and a chance to earn a point. The hosts had a 6 on 5 but failed to convert it. Gilberti blocked a shot from Valentino in the dying seconds, and Telimar kept all three points.
Pro Recco, playing without Aleksandar Ivovic, Andrea Fondelli and Gonzalo Echenique, was too strong for Posillipo. Midway through the second quarter, the European champion built a 6:0 lead. In the remaining time, Recco increased the margin to seven (12:5).
Brescia recorded a convincing win, too. It welcomed Iren Quinto. At halftime, the score was 7:1. Bresciaโs defense weakened in the second half, but the favorite dictated the pace and recorded a 15:5 victory.
Third-placed Ortigia visited Rome. The Sicilians were the heavy favorites in the duel with Roma, but Ortigia needed some time to secure the victory. Roma kept up with the hosts in the balanced first half (5:5). Ortigia dominated after the middle break. The visitors scored three unanswered goals in the third quarter and opened the road to a 12:8 win.
Catania and Salerno beat De Akker and Bogliasco, respectively, and kept slim chances of reaching 9th place. The teams ranked 10th – 13th will play in the relegation playoffs. The 14th-placed team will be relegated to Serie A2 directly. Bogliasco needs a series of surprising results to move from the bottom of the table.
