In most of the matches in all competitions this season, Telimar conceded ten goals or more. Today, the defense of the Palermo-based side was finally at a high level, which led Telimar to a convincing victory over Quinto (11:4). As usual, Americans Johhny Hooper and Max Irving were the key figures in the attack. Quinto scored the first goal after less than a minute of play. But, the Sicilians tightened their defense and netted five consecutive goals (Hooper 3 and Irving 2) for a 5:1 lead in the middle of the second quarter. Quinto reduced the gap to three a few times. In the 19th minute, the visitors scored their fourth goal for 4:7. In the remaining time, Teliamar produced a 4:0 run for a big 11:4 win.
After two back-to-back losses (to Trieste in the Italian League and Savona in the LEN Euro Cup), Ortigia returned to the winning track with an easy victory over Salerno. The Sicilians went to 6:2 early in the second period and didn’t let the visitors come back.
The third Sicilian club – Catania – also remained unbeaten this weekend, but it didn’t record a win. Bogliasco and Catania shared the points in the most exciting game of the day. At the beginning of the second half, Catania built a 4-goal lead (7:3), but Bogliasco took control after that and made a 5:1 series. The hosts leveled at 8:8 in the 27th minute. In the last five minutes, the teams traded the goals. Catania’s center-forward Nikola Eskert gave the visitors an 11:10 lead. But, Bogliasco leveled just 30 seconds after when Boero set the final score.
Trieste didn’t shine today, but it earned the points it counted on, beating Posillipo. Trieste led 4:3 after the first period. However, Posillipo opened the second quarter with four goals in four minutes and went ahead (7:4). Trieste managed to come back. By the end of the first half, the visitors leveled at 7:7. Midway through the third quarter, they built a two-goal lead (9:7) and dominated the final period for a 13:9 victory.
A rejuvenated team of Pro Recco (without Del Lungo, Figlioli, Younger, Zalanki,Aicardi, etc) ran over Anzio.
Brescis started slowly but recorded an easy away win, as well as Recco. Brescia defeated De Akker in Bologna.
Savona had ups and downs in the game against Roma. Savona took a 1:0 lead in its first possession and was always in front, but the team from the capital was coming back from time to time. Roma trailed just by a goal (6:7) before the final period. Still, Savona opened the fourth quarter with two goals within 29 seconds (Djurdjic and Patchaliev) for a solid 9:6 lead and controlled the match until the end.
