The Hague boldly takes the lead in the Dutch Cup

Waterpolo The Hague continues to surprise in the Dutch Cup tournament. The newcomer at the highest level won also its second match in the group stage (15:12 against BZC) and continues to lead group A.

In the same group, AZC is also unbeaten. The 21-time cup winner won – just like last week – with the smallest possible difference. This time the team from Alphen aan den Rijn was too strong for GZC Donk (10:9). Halfway the guests from Gouda still led 6:8, but in the second half of the match, AZC was in control. Laszlo Balasz Nagy scored the winning goal more than a minute before the end. ZV De Zaan and ZPB shared the points. In Zaandam it became 10:10. Mick van den Bree was the top scorer with four goals.

UZSC leads the ranking in group B. The young team from Utrecht had quite a bit of trouble with PSV in their own pool. Only in the last quarter was the team of the former captain of the Dutch national team Roeland Spijker able to convert the difference in strength into goals. UZSC won that quarter with 5:0. De Ham played its first cup match. It ended in a tie against ZVL-1886 (9:9). The team from Krommenie got off to a great start and was 3:0 ahead. Even in the last quarter the team was also ahead with two goals, but David Spijker brought the team from Leiden back to 9:9. He scored the last goal 15 seconds before the final whistle. ZPC Amersfoort won the tough away game against Polar Bears with solid play (5:8), which means that they have risen to the third place in the ranking in group B.

Women

Among the women, UZSC had no mercy in group A with PSV. The team from Utrecht pressed the visitors from Eindhoven under with 22:6. Nerida Drewes scored no less than 10 times! In the same group, ZV De Zaan won against Polar Bears 13:15. The difference had already been made in the first quarter. The home team’s final sprint could not prevent a defeat. Because of these results, UZSC and ZV De Zaan are still unbeaten in group A. Polar Bears and PSV are still waiting for their first points.

In group B the game between De Ham and ZVL-1886 had a strange score. In the first and last quarters the teams were evenly matched (3: 3), but in the two intervening quarters, ZVL was supreme. Sterre Bijkerk in particular was on target. She netted net six times. Het Ravijn made up for last week’s defeat by beating GZC Donk (16:13) and has in group B now as many loss points as their opponent from Gouda.
