The Dutch defeated Russia more convincing than it was expected. The Netherlands opened the match with a 4:0 lead. Still, the Russians cut the deficit (3:4 and 5:6) in the 2nd quarter. At halftime, the Dutch led 7:5, while they added two unanswered goals in the third period for 9:5. That 4:0 series proved vital for their win. Russia managed to reduce the gap to 2 (8:10) in the 27th minute, but the Netherlands responded with three goals in a row for a safe five-goal advantage (13:8).
