The journey toward gender equality in Olympic sport marked another milestone today. Women’s and men’s water polo will have equal representation at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Today, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board officially approved expanding the Women’s Water Polo Tournament to 12 teams for the 2028 Olympic Games. This decision followed last week’s recommendation by World Aquatics, which the Olympic Programme Commission endorsed.
The first Olympic women’s water polo tournament took place in Sydney in 2000, and it had six teams. Eight teams competed in the Games in 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016. The number of teams for Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 was increased to ten.
Spain’s women won their first-ever Olympic gold in Paris.
