Two experienced players who didn’t compete at the World Championships in Singapore last year have returned to the Greek squad for the European Championships in Belgrade.
Alexandros Papanastasiou and goalkeeper Emmanouil Zerdevas are, after missing last summer’s competition, on the roster for the Belgrade tournament, announced by head coach Theodoros Vlachos.
Besides the two, a new name compared to Singapore, where Greece won bronze, is a 21-year-old centre-forward, Semir Spahits, who will make his debut for the senior national team at a big competition.
Two returnees and one debutant replace goalkeeper Emmanouil Andreadis, Ioannis Alafragkis, and Nikolaos Gardikas.
Most of the members of the national team have played at the European Championships. Captain Konstantinos Genidounias will play at the Europeans for the sixth time in his career.
In addition to Spachits, Nikos Papanikolaou, Aristedis Chalyvopoulos, and Evangelos Pouros will make their debuts at the European Championships.
The roster includes two players from foreign clubs: Ferencváros standout Stylianos Argyropoulos and Marseille’s Efstathios Kalogeropoulos. Angelos Vlachopoulos was not on the extended roster for the preparations and, as in Singapore, will not represent Greece at this tournament.
