Hungary, Spain, and Greece enjoyed emphatic quarter-final victories as they joined Italy as the four U15 European Championship semi-finalists in Zagreb.
Germany deserved their place in the quarter-finals but were outclassed by Hungary 23-5 in the first quarter-final of the day. Captain Kincso Kenez tallied a magnificent seven goals, including two penalties, as the Magyars moved one step closer to retaining their title from two years ago.
Every outfield player scored at least once for Spain in their demolition of Serbia (18-5), with the Spaniards keeping the Serbs blank in the first half (9-0). Greece also kept a clean sheet for half the game, but in the second part of their unbalanced duel with hosts Croatia (19-5), Vouliagmeni’s Nefeli Krassa scored a double hat trick for the Greeks.
The only close quarter-final was a thriller, with the Netherlands falling just short of catching Italy (10-9). The junior Setterosa stormed out to a 5-1 lead after the first period and a 9-4 lead at halftime. The Dutch resisted and pushed back in the second half, ultimately falling short.
The Republic of Ireland were more successful in their rescue attempts, coming from three goals down in the fourth to defeat Slovakia 8-7 with another last-gasp goal – their second goal with 1 second on the clock at this tournament (the other against Ukraine on day 1).
Hungary will therefore face Greece in the first semi-final, while Spain will seek to secure a third consecutive medal at the U15 European Championships.
