Several important and exciting games were played in the 8th round of the Hungarian League. But, all eyes were on the βBela Komjadiβ pool in Budapest, where two former European champions faced off. Vasas hosted Szolnok and recorded a 9:5 victory. Szolnok suffered the first loss in the domestic competitions this season.
Ferencvaros and OSC continued their winning streak. Besides two Champions League clubs, Vasas is unbeaten, but it doesn’t have a perfect record (seven wins and a draw).
An encounter between BVSC and Honved was one of the highlights of the round. BVSC was three goals down in the second quarter, but celebrated an 11:10 victory.

The game Vasas β Szolnok was a clash between best men. Coaches Zivko Gocic (Szolnok) and Slobodan Nikic (Vasas), legends of Serbian water polo, are best men to each other
This time, Gocic had to congratulate Nikic, who recorded the big win in its third-ever match as a head coach of a senior team (he debuted on Vasasβs bench two weeks ago).
Szolnok is the reigning champion, but Vasas was a slight favorite because it was significantly reinforced in the transfer window (unlike Szolnok) and the home field.
Szolnok hasnβt recovered from the elimination from the LEN Euro Cup, while Vasas was prepared well for the match. A great opening of the game put Vasas on the right track. Brguljan gave Vasas a 1:0 lead in the first possession. Szolnok leveled at 1:1. Then, the hosts produced a 4:0 run (Balasz Eredly scored three of these four goals, two from the 5m line) and they had a 5:1 advantage already in the 10th minute. The rest of the game was balanced. Szolnok reduced the gap to three goals several times, but it couldnβt do more than that. Vasasβ defense, commanded by Branislav Mitrovic, worked well. The hosts shut out the best scorer of the league Daniel Angyal, who didnβt find the net today.
The other derby played in Budapest offered more excitement. BVSC defeated Honved narrowly in the game with twists and turns. Honved got off to a better start and led from the beginning. Early in the second period, the visitors built a 3-goal lead (5:2). BVSC chased the rival through the second and third periods and finally went ahead in the 23rd minute β Matyas Pasztor gave the hosts an 8:7 lead.
Honved opened the fourth quarter with two goals and regained a lead (9:8). But, BVSC responded with two goals and turned around to 10:9. In the 29th minute, Honved equalized for the last time (10:10). BVSCβs Csaba Meszaros scored an action goal with 52 seconds to go, for the final score (11:10). Marton Nagy led the winners with five goals.
Ferencvaros started slowly against last-placed UVSE. Still, the 2019 European champion recorded a comfortable 14:8 victory with four goals from center-forward Nemanja Ubovic.
OSC beat Eger convincingly. The first quarter belonged to Eger (4:3). But, OSC stormed in the second period and earned a 9:5 lead by the middle break. The hosts scored the first two goals in the second half. They went to 11:5 and never looked back.
Debrecen failed to record the first victory in the season, although it had a 10:7 lead at halftime of the match against Miskolc. The third period belonged to Miskolc (5:1), which kept a slim advantage in the scoreless fourth quarter to record a 12:11 victory.
